Actually, the closest comparable for me is Michael Jordan, spinning off a hapless defender, driving the net and drawing two more to him before dishing underneath to Pippen for the uncontested jam.

Bottom line is the flames need one high level draft pick and another couple good picks. They also need some time to develop the young players they have drafted to fill in the ranks.

The choice is not about his ability but where his talent can develop and be put to use. I never said the AHL team had more talent than the NHL team. I just think we have to start to take a longer view of our prospects, talents and give them the best opportunity to grow successfully.

That's why I don't envy Treliving's decisions. I completely agree he belongs in the NHL.

I watched Gaudreau's interview from tonight. The media members should be embarrassed for their questions. What a pathetic grouping of silly questions. A couple of guys didn't even ask questions, just made some statements and JG just had to pull out the old platitudes to fill the dead air.

I kind of love Millions' questions though, even if sometimes they come off as muddled, cause most of the time they're basically him saying "hey, let's cut the crap. You and I both know you're good enough to make this team. Go ahead, Johnny, tell them why you deserve to be here"

Gaudreau should be starting in the top 6.

Bennett should get at least a 9 game look.

Jooris has out played some of the veteran schlubs and deserves to be on the opening night roster.

100 percent agree. Johnny has done everything to make this team and although I always prefer overripening prospects to throwing them into the water too soon, that doesn't apply to Johnny. He's clearly ready for the NHL and I don't see how you can send him down after the latest games.

Bennett definitely has to go back to the OHL and bulk up and work on some things. He'd surely benefit from a few NHL games to start the season though. Give him a taste, show him what he needs to do this season and then send him back to Kingston.

With all the hype around Johnny and Sam, the guy that has surprised and excited me most this preseason is Josh Jooris. Always working hard, he's physically ready and he also has a bit of a mean streak. I want this guy on the opening night roster, he's earned it IMO. Hartley also seems to be a fan of him, so the chance is definitely there.

Send Sven and Ferland back to the AHL and use them as injury call ups. I think both have been fine, but they haven't outplayed the vets IMO. Sven is nearly there, but a bit more AHL seasoning won't hurt his development one bit. Hopefully there'll be regular spots for them after the trade deadline.

Don't get out to many games every year, but was able to take in last nights game. One of the funnier items was late in the game after a scrum, McGrattan immediately comes out for a shift and the crowd popped because they knew why he was out and immediately gets call him for roughing which draws boos. Penalty is over, doesn't get much time on the ice and immediately gets penalized again drawing more boos.

It was obvious why he was out there and thought it was funny the refs kept him in the box to keep control of the game for the last few minutes. Love Hartley for throwing him out there to take care of the after whistle business.

I think Engelland played well as the 5/6th D. Lot of ice, played a simple game.
Sven was decent, Yamaguchi was pretty invisible.

I think Bennett only stays up as long as Backlund is out. As soon as he's off the IR Bennett goes to Kingston (unless there are other injuries between now and then).

Jooris deserves to replace David Jones, plain and simple. There isn't much more he can do. Maybe McGrattan sits against the weaker teams? Quite a bit of toughness out there now with Bollig and Engelland.

Sven has looked ok but hasn't shown enough. I think Raymond replaces him on opening night if he's healthy.

Johnny's done it... I hope...

I had to leave after the second (grumble) and listened to the third on the radio, so these thoughts should reflect only the first 40:

- First two periods looked like a clash of teams that will battle each other for 13th in the west.

- Even before he went nuts in the third, Gaudreau was noticeable. He's definitely got the right instincts. Pretty much impossible to send him to Adirondack at this point.

- Bennett should get a few NHL games to start the season, but I'd probably send him back to junior

- The way Monahan looks in the pre-season, he's tracking for logarithmic improvement rather than incremental. Love the way he's playing, but still want to keep expectations in check. Would love to see him go 20g 25a with better faceoff percentage and improved possession numbers.

-Pleased as I am with Sven, I think Gaudreau bumps him down to Adirondack to start if the Flames want to give Setoguchi a chance in the regular season. Either way, I think Setoguchi ends up on waivers before October is out and Sven is in Calgary.

-Jooris does a lot of small things right. Happy to see he got rewarded in the third.

- Ramo and Hiller. Hiller and Ramo

Oh, one other thing - How do you fail to get a shot on a 2-on-0 breakaway? Winnipeg is no good.

Gaudreau has to make the team now. If after a stretch of "real" NHL games, it seems better for him to have a stint in the AHL, you can always move him down later. But as of right now, he is too good to demote.
Jooris is also making a case, and the fact he shoots right and can play at both C and RW is a plus. If he doesn't make the team, he should be one of the first callups. If Setoguchi makes the team over Jooris, the only thing I can think of is that the organization wants to give Setoguchi one last shot to prove he can play in the NHL before waiving him

The Flames should not be doing any favours for players' personal career ambitions. It's all about how the team does with that particular player in the red, black and yellow.

If an Adirondack-bound player out performs him, Seto should be waived and sent down and replaced with the guy who's earned a spot the hard way. At least in theory.

Even though the passing was horrible for both teams in the 2nd period, the pace of play last night was the highest we've seen this pre-season.

And Johnny looked fantastic again. 'Nuff said, he's made it.

Jooris looked great again, but anyone that thinks he is ready to play 82 games at the NHL level is just wrong, IMO. He has come such a long way and it's great to see - he is a legitimate NHL prospect now - but he still need to go to Addy, where he will be an integral part of the top 9. And hopefully he gets a call-up at some point this year, because he has earned it.

Baertschi should and will start the season in Addy I think. He has gotten stronger and has worked on his physical game - all good. But he has also lost his mojo. He needs to go down, play on the PP, and get his confidence back. And then he will be a great NHLer.

I know no one here wants to hear it, but Setoguchi was really solid last night. Really hustled on the backcheck several times, played physically, and was a presence out there.

Monahan was awesome.

Engelland is a nice addition. The size and physicality is obvious, but he is poised as well. A solid pairing with Russell.

Bennett wasn't good - at least until the 3rd. People have off nights though, and that's ok. I would expect that they play him again in Wpg to have another look. And I still think he gets some regular season games in. But he has to go back to the O.

I couldn't agree more about Sam and Johnny. Sam has wheels like Johnny and hockey IQ and his buzz saw approach will open up room for Johnny to...be Johnny. I see a great future for the pairing.

I wouldn't say it is out of doing favours for his career, but the thinking internally may be that waiving Setoguchi is a terminal move, so they need to be 100% done. With a player like that, waiving and demoting him could also end up having to loan to another AHL team and cutting ties, if he is disgruntled
