I think Byron is a lock... would be a major surprise if they sent him down. Good penalty killer and can be moved up and down the line-up.

Didn't they sign Byron to a one way contract?

Yeah but that doesn't mean much other than he gets an NHL salary regardless of where he plays.

Yes, I understand that. How does it work with waivers though?

One-way or two-way contracts have nothing to do with waivers. Waiver exemptions are based solely on the age of the player when they signed their first contract combined with total NHL games played.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_salary_cap#Exemptions
Byron is not waiver exempt. If he gets assigned to the AHL he has to go through waivers.
Capgeek added a good feature this off-season, where it shows each player's waiver status. The only players the Flames have who aren't already regular NHLers that would have to clear waivers are Acolaste, Cundari, and Thiessen.

With probably little-to-no-chance of him getting plucked off the wire. If you lose Byron on waivers it is an extra contract you get to play with, which is a benefit. He is not a part of the future and not a bridge player. If you lose him, oh well, you move on and don't sweat it.

*facepalm* I'm so glad you're not managing the Flames assets.
I don't want to get into a giant argument about what kind of player Paul Byron could be in the NHL, but I'm sure there would be at least a handful of teams that would be interested in him on waivers. Probably not at the moment with camps going on, but mid-season he would be a valuable injury replacement for just about any team. Can do almost anything you ask of him. Very valuable player.

Yeah, you don't want to get into an argument over the value of the 13th forward from the 27th place team in the NHL. You'll lose every time. Every team has numerous Paul Byrons waiting to get their shot in the NHL. For the Flames I would much rather see Granlund, Reinhart, Agostino, Arnold or Ferland take that roster spot. Byron is middling talent with little to no upside left in his game. His diminutive stature makes him completely unattractive in the NHL game. He would pass through waivers without a problem. If he doesn't, no big loss. Opens up a spot for better players with greater upside.

Not a bridge player? So what if he doesn't play bridge? My mom plays bridge - Grand Master in fact -but she's not gonna make the Flames.
Honestly, just because he doesn't play bridge is no reason to cut him from the team.

He worked his but off last year to stay I agree he should make the team. I wonder because of size how if at all it might effect Johnny G from making the club. It's just hard to get a read how Burke and Treliving will access their size.
They have definitely beefed up the team size wise. I think part of their strategy besides just to get bigger vs the LA, SJ, ANA of the division was also to protect these kind of smaller players.

Byron is one of our best possession players. I would be downright pissed if we sent him through waivers so we could have Bollig, Bouma and McGrattan throwing possession away on a nightly basis.
On a seperate note, everyone loves McGrattan, but how badly does he have to play before he gets cut?

on this team? Very bad. He's not hurting our chances of the playoffs and he's well liked in the room. Plus doesn't hurt to have around to police the other teams.

McGrattan is the toughest guy in the league and can play actual 4th line minutes without hurting the team. Add to that his leadership in the locker room and his relationship with Monahan I can't think why he would get cut from the team.

As someone who was very unimpressed (to say the least) with the Regher trade, and was also very unimpressed with Byron's performance up until last season, I think he makes it. Will he be a mainstay on the Flames for the next 5 years? Probably not. He is a very good utility forward and can move up and down the lines quite well (much better than I would give what I considered a top-6 tweener any ability to do).
I like Byron. Would not be a huge loss to loose him on waivers (though doubtful), but I would be sad to see him go.

I agree.
Bennett and Johnny Hockey not on the team and Setoguchi and Jones on?
Uhhhhh what?
Bollig and Hiller have looked Meh.
Have been impressed with Raymond and Engelland out of the newcomers.
