Maybe.
I doubt that Treliving envisions paying a guy 4.5 million a year to play 40 games though.

Calgary is probably the best place where Hiller can prove he's a #1 goalie in the NHL again. A 1A/1B situation with Ramo and Hiller is great, and it gives Ortio another 2 years to play 60-70 games in the AHL.
|
Won't be surprised if Ramo is done as a flame after this season. Could see next year Hiller mentoring Ortio.

Precisely. We somehow got rewarded with Bennett despite team effort and never-say-die attitude. We could be equally as lucky next year. I don't want to watch our team get tuned each and every night.

Well hopefully it'll be more about how the players perform than what Treliving envisions right now.

Good thing Trevling's not the coach. The more I think about this signing, the more I like it. 1A/1B type competition until Ortio is ready.

100% agree - it's unlikely we'll be a bottom 3 team next year anyway. Just need to hope for the best while continuing to watch this team compete and our young players improve. Even a pick in the 6-10 range will probably land us an elite talent.

I suspect both goalies will have their chance to prove who is better and by mid season will have split most of the games but one will come out on top by the all-star break. My inkling is Hiller will overtake Ramo, not that Ramo isn't a solid backup.

We aren't. We actually have good depth in the prospect pool instead of throwing the good kids to the wolves. However, championship teams always have at least 4 top players on their teams and the easiest way to get them is by picking in the top 5. This draft has 7 or 8 really good players, but two of them look like the best players since Crosby except McKinnon. I want the Flames to be a championship calibre team in 3-4 years. The easiest way to do that is to be terrible. Chicago was. LA was. Pittsburgh was. Boston and Anaheim got lucky getting great players deep in the draft.

Cool! Great goalie. Definitely didn't think he'd end up landing here.
Nice to have a healthy 1A/1B goalie tandem. It will be interesting to see how Ramo will cope with this.

So when he makes a big save, can the dome sound guy play "My name is Jonas" by Weezer?

I'm not saying that the Flames should not give a good effort and they should try to lose. I think they should not try to vastly improve the team for no reason just to get themselves out of the opportunity to pick in the top 3. It might suck next year, but it'll be rewarded by allowing us to be just that much better beyond.

Goalie competition for more starts it's a great thing until you get to the playoffs and don't know who your number 1 is. That won't be an issue for the Flames and this will be a more even competition in net than with Berra.

The improvements to the team isn't so much getting out of the top 3 as it is giving our current young players some talent to play with, and ensuring that they want to be here long term. Development is just as important as where we are picking.

I like this signing. Hiller with ~50 games, Ramo with ~30 -- albeit riding the hot hand.
