I am not excited for this at all, it's still golf season in September.
At least it's a good sign that ESPN is showing interest in hockey again.

The apathy in this thread shows that it's hard to start up something again. All momentum from 96 lost.
Even 04 was a dud other than Kiprusoff.

I think that momentum was lost in '98, mostly because of Dominik Hasek. The 04 World Cup seems unremarkable because NHLers were going to the Olympics. It seems unlikely that they will be going to Korea and once that sinks in this World Cup will gain importance.
I agree the mish-mash reams are gimmicky, but most world cups have gimmicky teams. Soccer has sub-national teams like England and the Faroes. It also lots of mercenary players that make teams like the US half German, and Algeria half French. Rugby has a united Ireland. Cricket has the West Indies and it used to have East & Central Africa.

I think this is going to be awesome. Hell, we could Monahan, Bennett and Gaudreau playing on the same team!

According to the head of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation, the groups will be
Group A: USA, Canada, Czech Republic, Euro All Stars
Group B: Russia, Sweden, Finland, North American U23s
Each team will play 3 games against their group and the top 2 teams in each group will play in the semi-finals.

Get rid of the stupid gimmick teams and this will be cool.
I can't believe someone thought that would be a good idea.

Would the n.american u23 get guys like McDavid and Eichel or would they go to Canada and US if good enough?
If the u23 doesn't automatically get guys like that, there's no point to sending a team like that. They'll get stomped.
Euro all stars? Wtf. Is that all the countries not good enough to have their own teams + other team rejects? Ya they'll be a real contender.
This format is gimmicky and contrived, they should have went with a classic setup. I won't be tuning in.

I don't mind the Euro team - it's better than beating up on teams that can field a few stars but not a whole competitive team. Guys like Chara, Josi, Hossa, etc would a pretty decent team. I don't like the Young Guns team. Though they'd sure be motivated.
If they use both teams, you might see 3-4 more Flames involved. Gaudreau and Monahan would be locks, maybe Bennett. Hiller might make the Euro team - they wouldn't be strong in goal. Of course Johnny might make the US team, which currently might have guys like Galchenyuk, Wheeler, Okposo and Bjugstad, who could be passed by Johnny.

They wouldn't be horrible, but they wouldn't contend for the title. I bet they beat the Czechs.

Eddie Lack is on the bubble, but what about Eddie Lack's Dad?
Someone tweet Hughson and ask him.
