At this point, I really think I'd be more sad to see Gio moved than I was seeing Iggy moved...taking into account their age and the state of the team.
That being said, if FLA added a young player like Trochek to the deal, I think I do it if I'm the GM.

Make a trade for Montréal's first rounder next year. I'm not convinced they're as good as they think they are. It might end up being a really good one.

It's not exactly set in stone at this point that Calgary does better than Florida next season. For all we know, we could be swapping them one of McDavid or Eichel.. as well as Gio. I'm sure that would go over well when we're, say, 29th and they're 26th.

That actually isn't a terrible trade. Gio is getting older and by the time the rebuild is done he will be past his prime. I do value his leadership role with the kids though and it makes sense. But getting #1OA and #4OA and potentially swapping next years 1st if they finish with a higher pick then us.
I also think FLA would have to add something as well. It would be hard for me to see Gio go though

If we get Eichel or McDavid out of it? Ekblad, and lets say Reinhart?

Brodie is a huge overpayment, especially considering we don't have much in the pipeline to replace him with. The point of acquiring Ekblad is to add him to our pool of defencemen.
Besides, the original rumour was that Florida wanted a young top-6 player... I'm fairly confident that would imply they're looking for a forward.
Just for discussion's sake, would anyone do 4th OA, Colorado's 2nd + Backlund for the 1st OA? If management feel Granlund, Colborne or Knight could step in & fill the void perhaps he's the type of player that makes the Panthers bite...
(For the record I'm a big Backlund fan, but for discussion's sake I think his name has to enter the mix sooner or later).

I just don't see the Flames or the Panthers in the top 2 spots.
The Panthers suffered through injuries (especially the loss of Barkov) and looked fairly better with Luongo in net.
The Flames know better to not get in the bottom 3.

As much as I hate to say this, I can see the Flames in bottom 3.

If Giordano gets traded (or even if he doesn't keep up his Norris calibre play) they're finishing somewhere around where Buffalo and Edmonton finish.

Nope, wouldn't even consider #4, Backlund and a 3rd. That's too rich for my blood.
I would consider:
#4, Hudler and a 3rd even though I like Hudler
#4, Glencross and a 3rd even though Glencross probably wouldn't waive
#4, Colborne and a 2nd
#4, Stajan and a 2nd
#4, Max Reinhart and a 2nd if FLA was in love with Max
#4, Granlund and a 2nd if FLA was in love with Granlund
Something in that mix maybe could get it done. FLA could always deal down to our pick and then deal down another couple spots for another asset.

Without a consensus that one of the top four were going to be a guaranteed franchise player for the team I don't make any of those moves. None of the players available are heads or tails better than the next guy. Since we need both a center or a blue liner I would just take the BPA and move on. I'd actually prefer the center. The majority of the best defensemen in the league were selected in the 2nd or later rounds. Use our extra picks to find that blue liner and come away from this draft with multiple bullets in the gun.

I would trade Brodie plus a 2nd rounder for the 1st overall. Including the Flames first rounder is ridiculous. I don't see Brodie as a 1st pairing defenseman on a good team. Ekblad has a much better chance at being one.

These are sensible options. I think someone else would out-bid those with a stupid offer from Stoopidville (Toronto), but these are the maximum I would give up from a Flames perspective as well. Preferably Glencross, Stajan or Granlund go (for me).

I've posted this before but...... GIO IS NOT BEING TRADED.
It would never happen. EVER. To promote an internally developed player to captain only to have him play the best season of his career and be our best player then turn around and trade him.... never going to happen.

I'd rather keep Brodie & acquire Ekblad as his new defensive partner. Could be a monstrous top pairing for years.
If we make any deals, we need to deal from a position of strength. Defence is not a position of strength.

There are no guarantees in the draft.
But if Treliving wants to move to #1 you can bet our scouting staff and Treliving himself thinks that Ekblad will be a cornerstone, franchise defenseman. He is looking like the consensus #1 pick by most scouts. I know people say blah blah second pairing, but most scouts seem to think he's the best player available and that he'll be a top pairing guy. If he is he fits us like a glove. He's a rightie, Canadian, he's huge, he's strong, he can play physical, he has a booming point shot, he's smart, mature, he's a leader, and the list goes on. Our defense would look amazing going forward.
If they don't think he's a future top pairing guy then of course they just sit at #4. But it sure sounds like our staff may be sold on Ekblad. Maybe some of my proposals are overpayments. I'd rather trade #4, a second and a third personally but I think FLA wants an established NHLer or someone they think is on the cusp of becoming a full time NHLer. If they like a guy like Granlund or Reinhart enough perhaps we don't even have to add a 2nd.
It's gonna be interesting!

I would only trade our 4th OA and Sven to Florida if we got the 1st OA and also a decent right winger or defensive prospect back in return. Is their prospect system any good?
