Apparently the news was supposed to wait until after the Stamps were eliminated, and then he justified it by saying it was his duty to report the news or some garbage. What a hypocrite.

I absolutely despise that piece of crap Eric Francis.
Reporting on the athletes and the coaches and the GMs, the actual product of any particular sports league IS different than jumping the gun on a broadcasters retirement. Also, reporting on a change in coach is different then jumping the gun a retirement.

This is a really sad day but it is expected. He had an amazing career and no Flames PBP guy will ever surpass him.

Also, Peter Maher was one of the reasons I became a Flames fan. I moved to Calgary at 8 year old and started sneakily staying up late listening to Flames games on a tiny clock radio. The games seemed so exciting and I was hooked. I still can't believe they lost that series to the Kings in 93...

If anyone doubted PM's abilities, they only need to hear the same hockey game called by the other team's broadcasters. I do that on satellite all of the time, and give me the scratchy, patchy fan960 feed over the digital sounds of the other broadcast any day.

It feels like Rogers is ripping the band aid off.

Best of health in your retirement Peter; please come back and do a period for us every now and again, eh?

I just realised that 8 to 8:20 won't be the same any more.

You're right it is different. Reporting that the coaching is going to be fired before a playoff game is much worse.

Yeah, announcing something that happens every year or two before an event that happens every year is WAY worse than announcing the end of someone's 30+ year career before it's supposed to be announced. Right?

Perspective is great.

Wow. Still remember staying up past my bedtime without my parents knowledge as a kid and listening to Peter call the games. Truly an icon and was amazing at what he did. What an extremely disappointing end to a day that started so well. Thanks for all the memories Pete, especially the 2004 playoffs. I've never listened to more games on the radio than I did that year.

Also remember waiting after the game one time to meet Iggy at the players parking lot. Pete stopped and talked to every fan there, signed everything that anyone requested, and was an all around great person. Calgary is losing not only a great PBP man, but a class act human being.

Sad news.
I don't want to sound to sentimentel, but this news gave me the chills.
When I start following the Flames in '94 I only had CNN to keep up with the Flames scores.
Every morning when I woke up the first thing I did was check the scores.
I didn't even know when my team was playing!
Later on I got internet and the only way to follow the Flames live was by radio.
It must be dozens of nights when I woke up at 3 a.m. (Dutch time) to listen to Peter Maher.
He makes every game 60 minutes of excitement without overdoing it.
I remember the '04 overtime winners and the frequent 'Yeah baby's' like it was yesterday.

To me, Peter Maher = the Flames and the Flames are Peter Maher.
The thread throughout my 'career' as a Flames fan.
When I (finally) visited Calgary for the first time last october, - and with Iggy and Kipper gone - Peter Maher was really the only person I want to met.
Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to do so, but I found out that so many people had so much respect for Peter... He's a legend... a true legend.

It will be really weird hearing a different Flames voice in the Dutch nights...

Thank you for the many, many memories Mr. Maher.
Enjoy your well deserved retirement!

I knew this day should come sooner or later, but I'm still not ready for this yet. Absolute legend who will truly be missed. Best wishes on your retirement Peter.

The Flames should induct Peter into the Forever A Flame program. I'm so sad if this is true.

At very least. Probably no chance they'll ever rename the Ed Whalen broadcast booth, but it would be nice see something like that for Peter.

I consider us a blessed fanbase for having so many years with Peter Maher and Ed Whalen. With the standard set, it's no wonder our fanbase complains sooooooooooooooooo much about every other broadcaster. Home or away.

I kind of hope Pete can be talked into doing a middle of the week Coach's Corner-type segment during the season games on tv once every 2-3 weeks.

I'm sure the Flames will do the right thing for Pete.

Honestly I don't think this news sets in until I hear the home opening win next season on the radio, with another voice, and I leave less than satisfied...

Sad news. I listened to Peter īs voice during many years. In those I was not able to watch Flames on TV or via GCL.....But I was pleased, thanks to the internet, I was able to feel the Dome, to enjoy the game LIVE.......till then it was only results on teletext on TV or in betting bureaus etc. Will not forget his yeah babies during 2004 play-off run......Then during my stay in CGY in 2011 I was able to meet him....... met him when we were leaving the Dome after Flames morning practice....was so cool, so friendly, we had a small chat with him...took some photos with him.....it was an extraordinary experience for me...........Now this sad day, Peter īs retirement......I wish him all the best!!!!!

It will definitely be weird to hear another voice calling the game on the Fan960.
Thanks for all the great memories and games Peter!
Truly a legend.

Maher, Iggy, Regher, Sutter, etc. Feels like I don't know the flames anymore. Please at least keep Conroy as special assistant.

Farewell Peter, thanks for your dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism. You will be missed, and I regret that I never had prior knowledge of your retirement so that I could relish your final broadcast.

I guess that now, like you told Harvey the Hound you will be doing your business elsewhere.

Shoot. That is sad news. I was probably 10 when I started listening to him on the radio under the kitchen table. I've already started missing Maher in the morning since the season ended. My drive to work will never be the same again. Congrats on a great career, Peter. You earned your legendary status.
