I do not know whether I like it or not. On paper, he has a lot of positive things going for him. Just have to see whether or not he'll do a good job. Have to wait a year or two before we know.

This is an excellent hiring by The Flames - I saw it coming. Huge loss for the Yotes.
Congrats!

The bigger pick in that draft actually will end up being 34. If you can hit a home run there (Think Ryan O'Reilly for Colorado in 2009) then you really set yourself up for success.
Look back at past drafts and you see that usually 1 or 2 really good prospects end up going in the top 5 of the second round. That is the important pick.

ah yes, the famous "Oilers screw up because they can't just pick the #1 from Hockey News" pick.

Not to speak of. However, the teams were Phoenix's AHL affiliates at the time (San Antonio until 2011, Portland thereafter), which is why Treliving was assigned to manage them. Phoenix didn't exactly have the budget to put a lot of resources into its farm system. Heck, they didn't even give their AHL team a full-time GM, just handed the job to their AGM as one of his miscellaneous duties.

GM of the AHL team is more about the details and the admin work of running a team. You're at the mercy of the NHL team for the players you have so its not really about success in terms of wins and losses if you're good as an AHL team GM.

That's my guess as well. I doubt most teams' draft lists are firm yet.

Today...

Treliving
Kisio?

Even without a new AGM, it's a massive improvement. But if they can add a solid AGM (such as Kisio), what an amazing improvement in front office staff that would be.
Remember, in all the conversations about high picks leading to or not leading to success, the one constant that clearly leads to success is strong management.
IMO, the management team is looking fantastic, and now let's see one more good decision for AGM

Don't know tons on this guy, only know the information I have read today but it seems a lot of hockey analysts whose opinions I respect think this is a good move for the flames. I think this GM hiring is receiving a more positive response than others of the past. So far it seems like a solid move for the Calgary Flames.

Just so happy that Burke didn't hire a crony from the Leafs organization. Or McPhee.

Looks to be a good hiring, I like that it is a bit off the board and is regarded as a very diligent worker with an eye for hockey detail.
The only concern I would have is the money. He worked well within the budget restraints of Phoenix just have to wonder if bigger pockets makes himself open up a little too much. Not a big concern though, Burke is always there.
Exciting times for the Flames.

Hopefully our Jankowski type picks are a thing if the past. I am very excited to see what is in store for this team in the near future. Great choice by Burke, couldn't be happier.

Didn't expect to see an example of the law so soon.
