The only way you get to talk to his agent is if you have an agreement with Chicago first. Otherwise, it is tampering, and you risk having the contract voided while being disqualified from trying to sign the player again, a seven figure fine and the loss of draft picks.
So bad idea then?

Edm just might, and then ruin yet another prospect

However, Hayes IS worth that now. Probably more. I would much rather have Hayes than a late 1st in this year's draft.
I think I will go with the late first this year. It is probably because I have a hard time seeing his offense translate into the NHL level, so for now I see him as a third line RW with size. Which makes him a great investment if the price is right. However, I am not an expert and I could very much be wrong...
Hawks would need Cammalleri to take a significan't pay cut to fit him in next year.
Only have $3 million in cap space to replace Handzus and sign a backup goalie
This scenario is probably way out there, but what if we re-signed Cammalleri (say 2 years 12 million) and flip him to Chicago (obviously Cammy would need to okay this beforehand) and we retain 1/2 of his salary. So Chicago gets Cammalleri at 1/2 price helping their cap situation and in turn they send us Hayes. We have cap room to spare, and we'd essentially be buying a 1st round pick for 6 million dollars. That seems like a pretty good deal for Chicago vs. getting the 54th pick. Is this even possible?

great news and calgary is probably the front runner, and yes while negotiating with him now is tampering, you can't seriously tell me that the flames didn't just make a good impression on hayes yesterday, and that gaudreau, arnold, and hayes haven't talked privately about their nhl futures. yesterday we lock down our top end college prospects, in the offseason we may scoop up another colborne type player. winds of change in calgary
I'm sure this has been posted. But there's a strong indication in bold that Hayes may in fact feel the same way as some others here here:

Congrats to my 2 Lineys and 2 of my best friends @johngaudreau03 and @BillDaHurricane for signing with the Flames. Doing big things #trio

WOW
To think we were worried about Johnny not signing. This guy practically just said he's going to sign with the flames right?

Maybe it's me making something out of nothing. But I percieve that little tid bit at the end of his tweet like he'd like to stick with his line mates while turning pro.

I tend to agree. Not even that subtle if you ask me.
No he didnt practically say he's signing for the flames....
He said congrats to my 2 line mates for signing with the flames. All three of them are doing big things. He hashtagged it #trio because they are a trio, and played on the same line. Just the way I see it. + That would be pretty unprofessional of Hayes.
I would LOVE Hayes to sign for us. But lets just relax a bit - im sure every team in the NHL will call Chicago about him and if he hits FA then he will probably get an offer from just about every team.
I think our chances would go up if he hits FA status. I would definitely trade a 2nd for him though!
in this interview he talks about his brother and the importance his brother has in his life.
but he also very matter of factly calls bill arnold his best friend, says they were best friends before either of them committed to BC.

I agree that the #trio reference is simply a reference to them as a line at BC.
But I still like our chances of acquiring him.

ESPN: Do you know what your plan is going forward with the Blackhawks?
KH: Pretty sure I’ll be signing once the season’s over. We’ll take it from there.
This goes to show players say all the right things during their collegiate years to their drafted teams, yet can opt out on a dime.
Everyone saying Flames fans were just paranoid that Johnny wouldn't sign is a little short sighted. We as fans had a right to be nervous. There was merit there. These decisions are becoming much more common.
