It's entirely possible the Oilers had some charity event... they might be playing sled hockey against some kids, or visiting the Children's Hospital. Who knows, I can just as easily speculate that as you can that the whole team lacks character or hates the guy.
Another thing, giving your personal goodbyes to a teammate and showing up for the media conference are two different things.
