No Giroux:
Dave Isaac@davegisaac7m
Canada asked for Claude Giroux in Worlds and the Flyers said no.
Dave Isaac@davegisaac6m
Sounds like Brayden Schenn might go. Simmonds is not. Gus, Lauridsen also going to Worlds. Streit not going.

I haven't seen Rämö mentioned anywhere in Finland. Might have missed something but it sure seems like he's not on the team.
Edit: A couple of weeks ago he said that he exåects to be talking to the national team, but I haven't seen him mentioned anywhere.

I'm not so sure if I'd be in a rush to go either. St. Louis pretty much whined his way into Giroux's spot on the Olympic team.

The Flyers owner wasn't pleased and he doesn't think much of international hockey anyways. You notice it was the Flyers who said no, not the player. For the owner, it's all about the Flyers.

I'm betting he had a word with his HART TROPHY FINALIST before making the call...

Draisaitl is playing for Germany, and apparently has been impressive in their exhibition games... another player to look out for.

Hudler taking shots at Backlund in preparation for the tournament: http://www.hockeysverige.se/2014/05/...smak-ar-hemsk/
Google translation...
Quote:
In daily life Hudler teammate with the Swedish star Mikael Backlund in Calgary, which is highly appreciated by the Czech star.
- Michael is a very talented player who always plays with speed and producing credits. He is very well liked by the entire organization and is a great guy. But I must say that his taste in clothes is horrible. He thinks it's cool, so we try to get him down to earth sometimes. I give his fashion 5 out of 10 possible points, laughs Hudler.

Finnish goalies have been picked, the rest of the team will probably be announced in the next couple of days.
Goalies:
- Pekka Rinne (Presumed starter.)
- Juuse Saros (Shiny new thing. Starter for the U20 gold team from this year, broke some rookie records in the Finnish league this season. Predators draft pick. Presumably groomed for future national team duties.)
- Mikko Koskinen (Similar story to Karri Rämö. 25 yrs, former Islanders draft pick, cup of coffee in the NHL, first season in Sibir Novosibirsk went great. Played on the EHT and played well, which I assume is what puts him ahead of Rämö.)
OJ is going I hear, but other than him and Rinne I don't know of any other NHL players. Some of you might remember some of the KHL guys from the olympics. (Komarov, Aaltonen, Petri Kontiola, Lehterä, Kukkonen, Hietanen, Immonen...) Teuvo Teräväinen could be there too.
Should be a pretty typical Finnish team from the last few years. Blue collar hockey with top goaltending and top coaching. Can beat anyone on a good day, not likely to win gold.

What do you think the chances are that Markus Granlund gets an invite?

I'm guessing slim, since I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere. Despite the strong showing in the U20 last year, I feel that Markus has mostly been ignored here in Finland.
Team is probably going to be built with a big emphasis on finding the right guys for the right roles, so things like familiarity and experience in playing certain roles probably matters more than maybe for some other national teams.
Of course Markus did well for the U20 team last year, so who knows, maybe somebody has a soft spot for him.
EDIT: All that said, it's not like I follow the national team that much, I'm just "some guy on the Internet" here

Okay thanks. I was hoping Rämö might get the third spot if Niemi wasn't going to come or something like that.
I think Finland will have a decent team. Always nice to watch some of the young players. Shame that Florida didn't let Barkov come, but at the same time I understand their position since Barkov has had three injuries within the past year.

Kudos to Olli Jokinen. Olympics and World Championships make a long season for him, but he always seems to answer the international call.

Even though he said after Vancouver (2010) that he's done with the national team. (Mostly because the coach who fed him 3rd/4th line minutes even though he was performing)

You're misrepresenting him. He did not step away from the national team because of his minutes. What he and other older players (including Selänne and Koivu) said right after the bronze game was that they'd made a decision to let the next generation step forward.
Well Selänne kept playing and people forgot about that decision, apart from maybe Koivu I suppose who didn't come to this year's olympics.

Brayden Schenn, Matt Read and Nathan MacKinnon added to Team Canada, Perron pulls out with hip injury and Sam Reinhart will participate in practice and an exhibition game.

I saw TSN's bumper ad for the tournament this morning. Wow. Way to pump it up.
