Pinder hypothesized on the morning show today that it was a way to honour certain players who, while important, were not thought of as Flames first. Argued MacInnes was more a Blue than a Flame, Nieuwendyk isn't around Calgary much and played less than half his career here etc.
Thinks retiring is going to be used for Iggy, Kipper, and ultimately Fleury. It actually isn't the worst idea when you frame it like that, and I've hated the whole concept. But my mind has been changed.

I can kind of see that, but in that context, what other organizations do this?
Just send a Thank You card and be done with it.
The way you (or Pinder moreso, as you paraphrased him) put it seems even more lame IMO.

Kings have a "Legends Night" where they honor their old players but they don't hang anything in the rafters for them (for example Simmer)
