McKenzie on insider trader says frontrunners for Folin are the Flyers, Wild, Lightning and Oilers.
Said all other teams that have been inquiring get the feeling they are out of the running.

What is about Oilers? they're in on most of these guys. Whats attracting these guys to that gong show?
And screw the Lightning too, they keep picking up these free agents and add to an already good prospect added from years of tanking.
I hope the Flyers get him.

The media has done a fantastic job selling a bright future for this team if young superstars. What young player, looking to break into the league, would not want to play with the next Gretzky or Coffey? Could set them up to be the next Huddy or Lowe. Plus, you show you can put up points you are all but guaranteed a six to seven year contract at $6 million a season.

Oilers also have a whole subsection within their amateur scouting department who's whole purpose is to scout and lure college and major junior free agents.

Flyers have signed LW Kevin Goumas to an AHL deal. He was the 3rd in Hockey East scoring after Gaudreau and Hayes

Posted this in the Johnny Gaudreau thread in the main forum:
Quote:
Apparently the Flames recently (i.e. within the last three weeks) ordered jersey nameplates for Gaudreau, Arnold, Agostino, and two other guys (who I believe are college free agents). Obviously nothing official, but it looks like the Flames expect JG (and Arnold) will be donning Flames sweaters at some point in the near future...
Don't know if this qualifies as anything but take it for what it's worth...
|
The two college free agents were Bryce Van Babrant (who I understand was invited to Flames development camp last year) and somebody with a crazy last name I had never heard of. Looking at the list in the OP, I believe it is this guy:
(started with a C and had a bunch of random letters )
Again, don't know if this qualifies as anything but take it for what it's worth...
EDIT: in hindsight, it might have also been Kevin Czuczman, who recently signed with the Islanders... so maybe much ado about nothing?

^They may have given him a Czuczman jersey as a gift when they made a pitch.

Don't teams have someone on staff to make their nameplates? We're all seen short amounts of footage from various teams/rinks of someone stitching a name on a nameplate/jersey. Doesn't make sense that they would order them at all. I am extremely skeptical about this information.

Well, Arnold for sure will be here once their season is finished so that resolve Arnolds nameplate. Just a matter of waiting to see if that other guy follows with.

I'm not saying the guys won't join the Flames, but ordering the nameplates? I mean really, it's done in house.

^^ The equipment guys can certainly do up an emergency one (i.e. if someone gets called up or traded), but they're not going to waste a couple of hours sewing nameplates when it can be easily outsourced.
The million dollar question is why they were ordered. Makes sense if they wanted a crested jersey to try and sign a free agent, but someone who has already been drafted? And in Agostino and Arnold's case, have/will be graduating this year?
One thing I didn't mention -- they specifically requested a nameplate for a game jersey (i.e. not a replica, or one of those press conference iron on jobs). Not sure if the material is different but it suggests this is more than just a marketing thing...

Their defence is so poor these guys can see it as an easy route to the NHL almost overnight.

ESPN has some good points on Denver Defence man David Makowski
(pay article)
http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/crai...nceCollegeUFAs
according to the article, an NHL exec projects him as a 4/5 offensive d man if everything goes right but what is particularly interesting about him is that he is 25 years old in the eyes of the CBA and therefore not limited by the entry level system
Could be a highest-bidder wins scenario.

ELC signing age is the player's age on September 15 of the calendar year in which the contract was signed. For Makowski, that's 25.

Yes. European players are required to sign a one-year ELC if they are 25-27.
