If it was up to Monahan I bet he would pick the NHL over the WJC. I would be choked to miss an NHL paycheck for 12 games.

Has anyone thought of asking Sean what he wants to do?

Probably 30ish of the 100+ posts here covered that.

Really...? While competition might not be the same it does not mean something could happen and from what I have seen it is from less skilled player making a marginal check.
Just My opinion and sure as the sun rises in the morning I have been known to be wrong.

Sean's a smooth talker. Not much hesitation and "and uh" "you know". He'll be a good media guy in time like Jarome was.
Who're his comparable-style players? I've seen him compared to Getzlaf, Eric Staal, and Anze Kopitar.

I heard a rumor somewhere that Team Canada would not expect NHL players to be released for the camp itself, only for the start of the pre-tournament games. If true, how many NHL games would he miss? This would include Monahan, Reilly, MacKinnon (not that MacKinnon would get released, or perhaps even Reilly either, given how their teams are competing), etc.
I think missing the 12 games would be too much. Not only is he missing too many NHL games which is probably the best for his development, but he will miss his NHL paycheck. On top of this, he could potentially miss out on a lucrative bonus if he would have won the Calder (is part of that bonus being nominated, or is it an outright win or nothing at all?).
I was 100% on the side of having Monahan go to the WJC's this year as I thought it would help further his development in some other areas (leadership, playing sudden-death pressure games, international play, a chance to be part of a team that could win some hardware, etc), but given how he has been doing in the NHL, and given that he has a real shot at the Calder, perhaps not.

I can't find Team Canada's schedule, but it looks like the Americans are flying to Sweden on December 18, so you'd think Canada will be about the same. If that's the case, he might be able to play in the Flames game in Boston on the 17th, then meet Team Canada in Toronto on the 18th. That would reduce his number of games missed to 9.

I've heard that he is comparable to Toews, and I definitely see it at times. That might be putting really high expectations on him, but I can't help but see the similarities.

Whatever the amount of games Mahonen might miss, this team stinks with him or without him. Would it not be better for him to go out there and actually have a chance of winning? I think winning would be great for him and his development. At least something positive to take out of the season.
