It would be fair point, but she says, he's drinking a lot and often. If the case was that he drinks rarely, but goes mad when he does, she would have said so.

Here is my take on the Varlamov situation, on another forum, for what it's worth:
"There is no way (he will be held in the US during the Olympics) will happen. Russia is hosting the Olympics, and Varlamov will make the team. Know how much of a stink Russia will make if Varlamov is held in the US during the Olympics? Trust me, this is NO conspiracy theory. Unless she was beaten half to death, there is no way in hell the Americans are going to hold him in their country during the Olympics. It would lead to retaliation against American athletes, and at worst, put the US hockey team at risk for their personal safety.
Remember the OJ Simpson Case? It had nothing to do with guilt or innocence. It was political. Racial tensions were high in the aftermath of the Rodney King beating, and the LA Riots a couple of years before. Justice was not served because the US feared there would be massive civil unrest and possible race riots if OJ was convicted. They chose they easy way out, despite overwhelming evidence to his guilt.
People who think Varlamovis going to be held in the US in February do not understand the ramifications of that decision. He going to Russia to compete in the Olympics, and if there is any chance of jail time, he will stay in the KHL."

Something is not coherent in this whole thing. It almost sounds plausible to me that Varlamov is being set up here by the girl.

But given that in the US you can buy alcohol anywhere, including grocery stores, and 7-11... they probably could care less who he is, and what he buys. It's just a lot of leg work for what is probably an overworked police force, as your asking them to go to every grocery store, wine shop, convenience store, etc, in the Denver area.
And even if they do know who he is, a pro athlete buying a lot of alcohol doesn't scream... red flag
|
Just as an FYI, yes you can buy alcohol in many places. However, locations like 7-11 and grocery stores are limited to what they can sell. So if we play up the stereotype, he can't get vodka or other hard alcohols.

avrinyuk: Yes, I got some messages on a Russian social network today. There's a website called "VKontakte." I got threats from Russian hockey fans on that website — they were saying that they would kill me, that I'd better not come to Russia anymore. And that there's a real life danger for me there in Russia. They called my mom and my sister threatening that if I don't get interviewed by Russian media, it will be bad for me and my name will be tarnished. I just don't understand.

This. Watch for the refugee application being filed pretty soon and Varlamov covering all of her legal bills. I am pretty sure she had planned to stay in US with or without him.

Smart move by Roy to get Varlamov back in there right away. Gets it out of the way quickly, minimizing the distraction to the team.

That's not true. I can get hard liquors ar walmart. Heck I can get hard liquor at the corner gas station if I wanted to pay way too much. Depends on local laws and individual store owners. Don't know about Denver/Colorado but Missouri you certainly can

Generally speaking grocery stores don't get to sell hard alcohol in many states. Colorado being one where it is restricted. More often than not you'll have to head to an actual liquor store for hard alcohol.
But I'm glad you pointed out a minority case.

Reading through the translated interview and again, something looks strange here:
Quote:
There's a limit to anything. I used to love this man. I wanted to have family with him. I was thinking that he would change over time. But people don't change. And this event was my limit, my last drop. I didn't want to go to the police this time either. But when I got back home, I saw my stuff by the door. I was thrown out like a dog. And that was the reason I decided to go to the police. Please tell them that until recently he (Varlamov) was thinking that I was joking with him, that I was just fooling and I wouldn't go to the police. When I texted him that I was going to the police, he just replied wishing me good luck. He thought that this time he would also remain unpunished.
|
Perhaps a poor translation but it makes it sound like that the tipping point to press charges and go to the police wasn't the abuse and mistreatment, but that he had kicked her out. He allegedly abused her, she left, came back, saw her stuff at the door and then decided to go to police because she was thrown out, not because he was being violent or threatening towards her.
