Isn't the majority of Moulson's production from playing with Tavares? I thought I remembered seeing some crazy stat somewhere about it..
Maybe the Sabres plan to flip Moulson for even more value..
I really don't think this was over payment on either side, just a good hockey trade.

Taking out the PP Glencross has outscored Vanek 51 to 48 !!!!!
Glencross has had Stajan and Jokinen as his centres and Stempniak, Moss, Bourque as his linemates..
There is a reason that Hartley sends out Glencross for his 18-20 minutes / game no matter how disinterested Glencross looks. You can't imagine Vanek getting benched and he averages far worse production 5 on 5 than Glencross.

Great post.
It highlights why I think Glencross is our most valuable asset not named Monahan.

Vanek has been the focal point of the offense in Buffalo for years now. He may not have been the most consistent scorer but he he was always the biggest threat and was still able to put up decent numbers. Glencross was the focal point of the other teams defense for maybe 3 and a half games this season and the fans turned on him and his lack of production. Comparing depth scorers and top line superstars is never very fair.

sometimes your posts provide some perceptive information/opinion. This time not so much.
are what you are trying to say is that Vanek is the very very worst top line superstar?? And Glencross the very best depth scorer?
I don't have the stats but I would venture to say that over the last 3 years Glencross would have played against more elite competition, the Sedins, Getzlaff/Perry, Kopitar/Brown, Thornton/Burns, Steen /Backes, you know the guys that are going to be on their countries Olympic team than Vanek.
do you feel that a super star like Vanek is constantly matched up head to head with the oppositions version of Glencross makes his goals more worthy than Glencrosses?

I'm not saying anything about Glencross and Vanek in terms of one another because they don't make good comparison, that's my point. Vanek was the Sabres top line talent for years, this is undisputed fact. That means night in and night out he was going up against the shut down lines the top pairing defenseman and having coaches strategize to stop him from scoring. As every top line does, and as the most offensive player on that top line Vanek was especially watched.
Glencross has never been in the same situation. It was Iginla who had that honour.
And it is a two-way street. Depth players don't receive the same amount of PP time, they might not have the greatest line mates, they might not get offensive zone starts, etc. etc. They just don't make good comparisons.

what's the over/under for Moulson and Vanek's points for the rest of the season?
For Moulson, I'll stick with goals. He currently has 6 so I'll say he posts 18 this year
For Vanek, he has 9 points - I'll say 77

Moulson will be traded at the deadline.
If he struggles I wouldn't be surprised to see it back to the NYI (Assuming they are in the playoff hunt). If he does as good as past seasons they will get a 1st for him

assuming that they'll stay with their teams and stay healthy, my predictions would be:
Moulson: 22 goals and 19 assists for 41 points (currently has 6+3 after 11 games)
Vanek: 39 goals and 35 assists for 74 points (currently has 4+5 after 13 games)
but who knows, maybe Moulson will surprise me. I also thought that Parenteau would fall off the earth in terms of production after leaving the Isles for the Avs, but he has been decent there too (50 points in 59 games).

Parenteau was a surprise, that's for sure.
But things are bad in Buffalo right now

Age 29... 254 goals (497 points) in 598 games (0.425 GPG, 0.831 PPG)
Age 29... 124 goals (233 points) in 333 games (0.372 GPG, 0.700 PPG)
Which one is which?

If the Flames think they can get a 1st for Cammalleri at the deadline I am pretty sure the Sabres could get one for Moulson.....
|
It's hard to say what the Sabres could get because Regier has shown some terrific asset management/maximization when flipping players for picks. However, those stats don't paint the complete picture. Cammalleri hasn't played a full season since 09-10. In that time span:
Cammalleri (81 G 94 A in 246 GP) = 0.72 PPG
Moulson (118 G 105A in 304 GP = 0.73 PPG
That's a lot better comparison of production. Moulson gets extra points for being healthy in that span but I don't think there is a question of who is the better player.

Hey, Moulson scored without Tavares!
First goal in Sabres gear.

It would be nice if we had someone who could score on the powerplay...

Make that two. Boy if Moulson maintains a similar scoring pace to Vanek in NY the trade will look like pretty poor asset management. I can understand Moulson and a 2nd maybe but to throw in the 1st round pick. Regier is probably still smiling like Christmas came early.

That was not the Flames problem last year. They had all sorts of talented PP specialists: Wideman, Gio, Iginla, Tanguay, Cammalleri, Hudler even Cervenka could fit in the PP specialist category. They had a pure PP specialist Babchuk that they didn't even dress.
In 2010-11 (the last full season) Glencross was 8th on the team in PP time/gm (counting Camalleri/Bourque as a single entry) ..... that puts him at the bottom of the second PP.
Feaster went and focussed on building a skilful team

Top one has to be Vanek just thinking back to the RFA offer and everything. He seems to be a name I remember longer then I remember Moulson's.

Now word is out that Buffalo also retained 19.5% of Vanek's salary, which accounts for the extra picks.
