I would have to agree with this. When the players are interviewed after being traded here, they always talk about their families and what a great place Calgary is to raise a family. I think this plays a much bigger role than climate, this seems like it is an obvious thing to me. Also, the quality of the organization should also play a massive role.
the weather might not be that great but a young, growing city is a good place to start.
Much better than Edmonton and Winterpeg for sure.

Who gives a flying fata about which cities are the most desirable. Yeah it sucks if a big profile player wouldn't want to play in Calgary, especially if he is an upcoming UFA, but who wants players that don't want to be here anyway? You win with guys who want to stay and make your team better. That's why we shipped out Tangs.

One thing about the less desirable cities though, is that if there are openings on the team, they can present ample ice time. If a city like Edmonton is trying to attract UFA's in the summer, I would think that players consider just how much playing time they are going to get. It is a chance for an NHL'er to build a better profile for themselves, and possibly attract more attention / dollars from other teams down the line.
Places like Calgary and Edmonton may be considered stepping stones for some. I have to think someone like Jiri Hudler saw this when he signed here.

Not in the slightest.
My point is that your lifestyle and it's demands are different than that of a celebrity professional athlete and that the things you enjoy and prioritize in your life are likely different than those in the public eye with different concepts of free time. Unless you or your spouse is from here, you're unlikely to be motivated to come here given the choice of places to play.

but there is more to a city than just the climate, Montreal is a pretty big dump but they hide behind the historical significance of the city, same with Detroit. Take away their success and give Detroit 5 Oiler like seasons, we'll see how well they attract Free Agents.
I have never been there, but from repetition alone, the state of New Jersey seems to be a butt end of many jokes.

Yet the data that you/Cliff argue so hard about, shows the 5 least desirable places to play were the 5 worst teams, almost in order.
When push comes to shove, it comes down to success. Common sense proves it, data from the polls that you/Cliff argue so hard about prove that.

In 2007, the year the article in question was published, the Buffalo Sabres--first on the list of least desirable places to play--won the Presidents Trophy and scored over 300 goals.

But Calgary is 9th most desirable place to play in the NHL, so maybe its a great city with great shopping?

Edmonton is a dirty hole. Calgary is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada.
Take your pick.

The reasons players like Miller chose not to play in EDM mostly apply to CGY as well.

No offence to anyone from Edmonton, but Calgary is a much better city. In fact, aside from home, Calgary is my favorite city in the world. I would rather live in Calgary than Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, LA, Minneapolis, or NYC. Players who do not want to come to Calgary are short sighted, as the tax rate in the US has shot up, and will likely continue to do so. In fact, with the dollar on par, Alberta should be one of the most desirable places to play.

Exactly.
Winnipeg is a very underrated place to live, as it's a great place to raise a family, or meet people. I don't care much for Winnipeg winters, but nothing beats summer in Manitoba. Lakes and beaches in every direction. Most people own a cottage for the summer, relatively affordable. Between May and September, there are tons of things to do in terms of festivals, parks, beaches, campgrounds, etc.
If one can tolerate the Winnipeg winter, it's not such a bad place at all.

It's great for you that you like Winnipeg but for the vast, vast majority of people in the world there is lots that beats Manitoba in the summer. It is an awful place to be any time of the year, summer included.

I don't understand how anyone could have the oilers on their no-trade list. I think anyone who does hast o revise it, I mean they have Taylor Freakin' Hall on their team! Sure they are horrible collectively, and well they really haven't done too much individually either but he just broke Wayne's record and scored 2 goals in 8 seconds! I mean did anyone see on TSN how big of a deal they made over this?!?!?! That should be enough to convince anyone to want to play on the oilers. Sure, they did end up losing the game and they're tied for second last in the league, but 8 seconds?!?!?!?!?! Come on now, that's enough to make everyone want to be on the oilers isn't it? If that wasn't enough, the fact that you can clearly come to the team and do whatever you want or not do what you don't want to, say anything and still be rewarded with probably a 7 year 6 million per year deal... I mean, I'm pretty sure people are going to start lining up to be on the oilers any day now....

Lived there for a few months and absolutely loved it. Possibly the best place I've ever spent an extended period of time, which is a pretty big list. Although those months were May to August so thats not exactly a great sample for a hockey player to go by.

Summers are irrelevant.
Hockey players are generally only living where they play for the winter. They can live wherever they want in summer.

Gotta agree, It would probably be the last place I would want to go if I was a NHL player. Calgary and Edmonton would have basically the same appeal to any hockey player.

I work for an international corporation and if I was told I was being forced to transfer to one of Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Dubai I would take Dubai!
No offence but I lived in the north for 35 years and there is no way I would go back.
