It's too bad Poirier got stuck on the second line with that scrub Gauthier. In all seriousness, I understand the appeal of a 6' 4" player who can play with the puck, but he is an especially underwhelming pick from this year's first round.
It would have been amazing to see Poirier with Drouin, but it appears that the coaches wanted to spread some finishers through the lineup.

Yeah, Guthier really disappointed me as a first rounder. Hearing he played with Porier was a disappointment too. All he really had was his size upside (to me anyways).

Can't really blame Poirier's lacklustre performance on his linemates. Marc Olivier Roy didn't get to play with Drouin and he impressed me more than Poirier (note: just one game). Poirier needs to show better regardless of who he's playing with. I thought he was invisible the whole game. Hope he shows more on Wednesday.

That's interesting, especially considering Poirier's own situation in Gatineau, where he and Martin Reway provide pretty much all of the team's offence. Maybe he is too accustomed to having to generate so much on his own. This could also explain why it took him a few practices and scrimmages to find his groove during training camp. Hopefully, he has a better showing tomorrow, and continues to improve through the WJHC.

I thought Poirier did well..
-shot over the bar twice on plays created on his own
-caused many turnovers; but when he would pass the puck off his teammates would turn it over
-roughing penalty was a weak call
-he also got his team a pp by using his speed
Not his greatest game but def not invisible.

If he continues to not play much, I wonder if that will hurt his confidence.

I love how everyone around here assumes that all our prospects are mental midgets, incapable of handling minor setbacks & adversity.

It's probably because Flames fans are use to cheering for a bunch of mental midgets, incapable of handling minor setbacks & adversity at the NHL level.

I watched about half of yesterdays game and wish Poirier had more ice time. I was constantly looking for 72 and whenever I saw him he made an impact. Whether it be blocking a shot, laying out a devastating hit or keeping the cycle going on the forecheck, he made a positive impact. Easy to tell the guy is physically ready for pro hockey.
Some time in the AHL will help him round out his game. It does seem like he's got room to grow offensively (yes I know he's ripping it up in the QMJHL). With his size and speed this kid can make things happen on every shift. I can't even imagine how deadly he would be with a hard accurate wrist/slap shot.

So is Paul Ranheim a good comparable for Emile Porrier? Hopefully with a little better scoring touch, although Paul did have a 68 goal season with the Golden Eagles.

Hope not...
Not intended as a shot against either, but I remember Ranheim a lot like Lombardi. To fast for his own good.
My hope for Poirier is a energy/ pressure the puck guy who can put in 20 goals.

That's what Ranheim was though. He was a 20 goal scorer on the Flames and a very good defensive forward.

Poirier article on nhl.com:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=694695
Quote:
"I didn't think of that. I wanted to go (to Team Canada) but it's OK," Poirier said.
"They are all great players and when you look at the list it will be a good team and they'll have a good four lines"
Since being back with Gatineau, Poirier has had some adjustments to make but overall his play has been one of the biggest factors in allowing the Olympiques to go 21-10-0, good for fourth place overall in the QMJHL.
Olympiques coach Benoit Groulx says Poirier has to realize that he is now one of the elite players in the league.
"He had two average games against the Russians but I think for him it will be positive down the road," Groulx said of being left off the Team Canada roster.
"Being at summer camp and playing with the best players in the league, it was all new to him. He has to realize that he is one of the best players in the league and that he is good enough to be there. I don't think he was prepared mentally but that will come with maturity and down the road that experience will help him out."
While Poirier's focus is on Gatineau, you can't blame him if his mind sometimes drifts to Calgary, especially given how well fellow first-round pick Monahan has fit in. The 19-year-old Monahan was expected to return to the Ontario Hockey League's Ottawa 67's this season, but instead he is sticking in the NHL and has nine goals and six assists in 24 games with the Flames.
"The (Flames training camp) was a great experience and it was a good preparation for next year. I came back here to junior and focused on my play and work on a few things which will help me next year," Poirier said.
"To be in Calgary next year that's my number one goal."

That's a lot of forwards who look to be good bets to make their NHL debut with the Flames next season. I think Gaudreau will be probably close to a lock, and then both Ferland and Poirier are both realistic options to make the cut.
I expect two out of three to make it.
