I really like Apple products, I've owned everything from mac laptops, to ipods, ipads, and iphones.
That being said, their pricing just seems outlandish at times. I got a 32 gb Samsung GS3 last year for free (on contract) and added a 64gb micro SD card to it for about $70. That's 96 gb of storage space. In order for me to get the max storage space Iphone it wouldve cost me $299 at the time, and I would've had less space. Also, IOS was feeling pretty stale as I was coming from an Iphone 3GS. It was a no brainer to switch. There's no way that the gulf between the top tier android phones and the Iphone is worth $200-$300. I actually could see myself switching back to the iphone becuase I like the seamless integration between my macbook, ipad and the phone. But I'm not paying ridiculous prices in order to do it, especially when my android phone has been at least as good of a platform, if not better in some ways. I feel the value Apple offers with the Iphone has decreased dramatically.

There's nothing wrong with being loyal to a brand, whether it's a sports team, a type of car, electronics, a business, a celebrity, or anything else that you enjoy. If it makes a person happy and doesn't hurt anyone else, you're an a$$hole for trying put someone down because they enjoy a particular thing.
Whether you agree or not, Apple is still delivering on the promise they've given to people that enjoy their products. They just work. Sure there's going to be hiccups along the way but this release, as with their previous ones, allows all their devices to work together in one way or another.
Apple is in the business of making money and few companies do it better. But they also create really cool products that are typically better made than their competition. Some Android phones look great. Samsung is doing great stuff with their phones (I'm loyal to them for TVs). But you can't deny that the vast majority of Android phones are garbage.

Their coolness factor was forever gone when they came out with the ipad mini and the iphone5. It seriously looks like they are going the way of Blackberry.

You can sign me up too. Course it's going to cost me big time if i'm wrong. I bought lots & lots of appl puts 2 days ago.
Some investors think their China deal would save them but after looking at their prices and knowing how cheap chinese people are they aren't going to switch.

Stock down nearly 6% more today. I'd imagine everyone who cashed out at $700/share is totally psyched and anyone who predicted AAPL would eventually get into the $1100-1200/share range feels humbled. The "cheaper" iPhone is a pretty big gamble going for profit margin over market share. Overall though Cook is a pretty crappy CEO, not sure how he keeps his job more than a few quarters more.

You're amusing if nothing else.

Well anyone who though that the iphone 5 was below average is making 45% right now.
Anyone who is thinking the 5c and 5s are lackluster is making 9.6% in 2 days!
AAPL down $29 right now.

Our current plans expire in October and I think I will opt for the silver 5S and I'm talking my wife down to the 5C (to soften the $$$ blow) and I think the colors will be enticing enough for me to sell that to her as she really doesn't use her phone for much more than texting and facebook.

Sure but a 2+% drop immediately following is pretty large. And the lacklustre keynote is now beginning to pile on the "bad" news (if a highly profitable company has bad news). To not meeting expectations from the last phone, to cannibalizing ipad sales due to the mini ipad (and hurting the bottom line because of it), to not meeting street guidance, from losing market share and not being able to make major in roads into new markets. If the the 5c and 5s sales are underwhelming in Q4 which not many would be surprised if they are it's going to continue to erode the stock price. Unlike the last decade where such drops were momentary blips on an ever increasing stock price the stock right now is in general decline to begin with. Along with all those other listed things this will likely make these downward blips larger and more "permanent".
Now if all of a sudden the 5c and 5s have huge sales then the street will be wrong and stock price will go back up.

What I think Apple should have done is:
- Discontinue the 4 and 4s
- Keep the 5s as the flagship device. $699 unlocked
- Keep the 5 as the "secondary" device. $499 unlocked
- Use the 5c, but have it contain the 4s CPU and guts, but keep the 5/5s screen size. $299 unlocked
They would have had their high and medium end, had a good device for under $500, and would have been able to grab some of the Android sub-$300 share.

Apparently the big three are making you sign on for their new overpriced talk/data plans to get the discounted phone price. I'm tempted to just buy the phones outright and go with a cheaper Fido plan.

Not even that much cheaper though.
Fido: $65- 1GB, UNLT NW Calling, UNLT Text + $719 outright= $2279 for 24 months
TELUS/Bell/Rogers: $85 1 GB (2GB right now with double data)+ $199 contract price = $2240
Actually $39 cheaper right now with the Big three, and you get the double data.
If you have a good existing rate plan somewhere that would be your best bet. Buy the phone outright and keep your existing legacy rate plan.

I don't need unlimited plans as my wife barely uses up data and I'm not exactly buried in my phone often.

Only one who will be flexible is Virgin where you could go on their lower tier plans (Silver/Gold) and just pay an adjusted upfront cost.
That being said, you go from paying $200 on a $70/mth (platinum) to $500 with a $40/mth (gold)
Of course you'll have to crunch the numbers of the plans you'd be interested in versus buying outright and keeping your current plan.

I'm with Fido now and was comparing it to Koodo. Basically exact same plans right now. Almost smells of price fixing. I'm going to try and negotiate a new plan with Fido while getting the 5S but I have a feeling my current $50 plan won't cut it. Might have to buy one outright but don't really want to spend $700+ either.

Can't I just buy a 5s outright and purchase one of their nano SIM cards?

I know a year back even a jail broken iphone didn't work on the wind network. Maybe it's changed.
