You could be prone to wildfires if you live anywhere, the prairies, interior BC, etc. Living right beside a river that floods all the time is a predictable disaster waiting to happen, no?
We have officially declared a local state of emergency. This means that we are working hard to ensure that resources are available to ensure safety in the river valley. We will update as more information becomes available.
Evacuations have been ordered in low-lying areas in anticipation of a water release via the Old Man dam.
I didn't live here in 1995, but they are predicting water levels as high as the flood from that year.
I just walked the bow, nowhere near as high as it was in 2005. Prob hasn't peaked yet though.
Apparently this is going to continue for the next couple of days though. Maybe I'll get Travis Munroe to sell me a house if my neighbourhood gets destroyed.
If that's Cochrane, that water must be passing through Calgary at any time no?
Depends how much of it they can queue up in Bearspaw Reservoir. Although with Ghost Reservoir above Cochrane they have a certain degree of protection as well.
News report on 660 News stating they expect the water to run over the glenmore dam.
This is going to very bad.
EDIT:
I predict the elbow to be up over the Macleod tr southbound bridge.
2005 was the one and only time that the water has gone over the dam, so I would expect something similar this time. Although as others have mentioned, it depends how much capacity they've got in the reservoir. But whenever you lose your control mechanism over water levels in the city, it isn't going to be good.
I also recall that in 2005 there were issues with the drinking water because of the silt introduced to the reservoir. Basically they water treatment plant couldn't keep up.

From what I understand they try to open the dam to let water run down the Elbow to prevent the reservoir from overflowing. That's what happened in 2005, the water released is what will cause the flooding along the Elbow.
I doubt it. Given the advance notice of all of this rain they should have been able to reduce the water level in the resivoir prior to the rain. Generally they will also flood the down stream communities before letting amy damage occur to the dam
