Not sure why we have to throw big money at any somewhat star player over 30 unless its a 1 year deal. Let guys like bscklund get top icetime. Give them some quality veteran top 9 players. Worst case is,we draft top 3 next year. Best case is thr younger guys take the next step.

Are you saying Vinny likes the weed?

He's spent his entire pro career in Florida. I'll be happy if he's managed to keep his experiences with meth down to a light dabbling.

Why the hell would anyone want Lecavalier on this team for any extended period of time?
So many better and younger Cs that aren't in the twilight of their primes that will be available.
Weiss and Bozak should be FA day targets, 100%. At least one of them will look a little better than us having Stajan to show as our top roster center.

The only way I would be happy to see big contracts on this team for players that are not part of the future of the team (guys like Horton) is if Calgary is taking the contract in a trade to give the team cap relief with some great compensation coming back with the player.
Sarich I wouldn't mind see staying to help mentor the younger players if a deal isn't in place to move him. Stemp should get a pretty good return or don't move him. Unloading him for a third or fourth? No thanks. Tanguay I don't really care about, he has no future with this team so if a deal is in place with a decent return, you pull the trigger.

Of course that has nothing to do with Oil fans but it's just as silly.

As I already explained, I was merely suggesting a structure of a trade, not a specific trade. I didn't suggest that specific trade should happen. I was merely pointing out that there is a system in place with compliance buyouts which the Flames are setup, probably more than any other team, to essentially buy draft picks from other teams. The system is only possible for these two offseasons where buyouts can be made without cap hit penalties, and the Flames are in a position where they might both have some extra cash to spend, and really wanting extra draft picks.

Wasn't aiming that specifically at you. There have been multiple people who have suggested we take on huge buyouts to gain a prospect or pick as if the money meant nothing. I can't see us taking on a bad contract unless the player would actually fill a useful roster spot.

I was one that was advocating taking on a bigger contract........if it made sense.
Just because I believe it's a viable option for the team to pick up some prospects or picks doesn't mean they should take on garbage contracts and to heck with the consequences. And I wasn't mentioning taking on a contract for the sole purpose of buying the player out.
If it makes sense, do it. If not, pass. The Flames have a lot of options when it comes to the salary cap this off-season.........I hope they take advantage of it.

I could see the Flames targetting Malone. Size. Some scoring. Toughness. And Tampa will be eager to dump his contract. He'd be a cheap stop gap.

I do think they need a veteran forward who will help lead the young guys in the dressing room and will stand up for them when needed on the ice. Malone fits that role nicely.

I want the Flames to target a guy like Bobby Ryan, assuming they can get him extended.
To Flames Ryan, To ducks, St Lous 1st, Giordano and Stempniak.
Flames get a top 6 winger. Ducks have a ton of old players. They give up a top 6 winger for a decent 1st, add a top 4D and also get a winger who can ease the offense loss. Plus they re-arrange their larger cap hit from one player to 2 plus a 1st.

I agree that Ryan needs to get out of Anaheim. That poor guy is in every trade rumour it seems and nobody in management steps up to squash it. He needs to go somewhere where he is appreciated. He would be a rock star in Calgary.

IF COL is interested in Alex Tanguay, I wonder if we could get pick #31 for Tanguay and pick #66?

Either way, this team is brutal. It'll just be more fun to watch the kids play, IMO.

I don't really care about winning or losing. My expectation is that the Flames will be a basement team next year.
I am concerned about having a good mentor system within the Flames. Piling on a team full of rookies will only increase the chance of each rookie busting. The coaches can only give each rookie so much attention. If we have 3 rookies, there is more mentorship available for each young player. If we have 9 rookies on the team then the available resources to help each player develop is cut to 1/3.
This might not be an issue, perhaps the Flames are ready for this transition, but I would much rather have a system in place for grooming each of these young guys into successful NHLers instead of just opening the flood gates to get them all onto the big team and then just see who survives.

This is a huge issue imo and why the best teams always have good veterans on the team. Ideally you want a process not just a team. As new payers join the team they get brought in by being paired with a vet to learn what it means to be a flame. If no one knows what it means, how do you develop a culture/identity?

This makes excellent sense. Offhand, I don't remember any team having much success with more than four or five rookies playing regularly.
