Ah yes, respond to the possible infringement of privacy rights from a million miles with threats of violence on people who disagree. What an intelligent response.

Therein lies the difference between working in the role of an opposition critic versus actually being responsible for the safety of the American public. Obama has worn both hats now and its not easy laying off the tools available to him in his current job.

The debate is healthy but the American public will always err on the side of surrendering some privacy to aid in the defeat of an external threat.

Mr. Snowden is going to spend a lot of years in jail. Unless he defects to Cuba.

And you know this how? I'd venture that you have no clue what he had access to and what his job entailed.

Putting that guy in jail would put 'Murica right next to Cuba (note for valo-I don't mean geographically).

Sorry- a few too many trips to Little Havana, I guess. The coffee is great, and sooooo much cheaper than Starschmucks. 50 cent espresso man!

Maybe it's time to move my Yankee butt to Kuching, as it sounds lke Ka-ching, ka-ching...

Do I qualify as a tin foil hatter if I wonder about staying here?

I'm not American, so I'm just following this as a news junkie -- just in case anyone at the NSA wants to know.

Anyways, I found this, just for fun.

They are already looking at the asylum papers for him, but as of yet he has not contacted anyone here in Iceland.

My friend Smári at the pirate party was contacted by fox news on the phone, quite hilariously this was his reply to them:
Quote:
A FOX person called me earlier, interview request. Thought I didn't know of them. I said, "I'm aware of you. I watch you with abject horror"
Also a bit more about the interview they wanted to do:

Quote:
Her opening line was "hello, is there anybody there that speaks english?"

I was going to go on, but then on the last minute they a) showed technical ineptitude of a degree I've never seen in a TV channel, and b) said they'd edit a 5 minute interview down to 30 seconds, which is something - given Fox's bias towards idiocy and the nature of the issue, I could not consent to.

She: "Could you stay on the phone so we can relay the questions to you that way?"
Me: "Then I'm going to have to hold the phone to my head during the interview - do you want that? Won't it look a bit odd?"
She: "He'll ask you a question, then you put it down and answer the question, and then pick it back up again, okay?"
Me: "Wait, what?"
... thinking about all the times today I've done TV interviews with, like, bidirectional audio with the host plus a producer or team of producers speaking in my ear as well.

Snowden's "pole-dancing superhero girlfriend" is now "lost at sea" emotionally.

I tried to find pictures of her to no avail. I really tried.

From the Globe and Mail

Quote:
Defence Minister Peter MacKay approved a secret electronic eavesdropping program that scours global telephone records and Internet data trails – including those of Canadians – for patterns of suspicious activity.
Mr. MacKay signed a ministerial directive formally renewing the government’s “metadata” surveillance program on Nov. 21, 2011, according to records obtained by The Globe and Mail. The program had been placed on a lengthy hiatus, according to the documents, after a federal watchdog agency raised concerns that it could lead to warrantless surveillance of Canadians.

Article from Vanity Fair by an author who wrote a behind the scenes book on the whole 'war on terror' thing.

Pretty much echoes why I don't find this that troubling.

Has left Hong Kong and arrived in Moscow.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-23021767

Beeb reporting that Russian media is reporting that he was met on the tarmac by a diplomatic car speculated to be Venezuelan or Ecuadorian.

Believed to be boarding a flight tomorrow to Cuba then onwards to Venezuela and then ? Ecuador.

I don't know where else to put this. Anyways, there's some weird things coming out about the death of Michael Hastings.

From Wikipedia:

Hastings became a vocal critic of the surveillance state during the investigation of reporters by the US Department of Justice in 2013, referring to the restrictions on the freedom of the press by the Obama administration as a "war" on journalism.[5] His last story, "Why Democrats Love To Spy On Americans", was published by BuzzFeed on June 7.[6] Hastings died in a fiery high-speed automobile crash on June 18, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.

Anyways, apparently his body was cremated, and his family never asked it and some other things worth discussing!

So we are supposed to believe Obama or someone in the government had him killed? Okey dokey.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the US government has had people killed on American soil. This one in particular is certainly a stretch, but in general I would bet they've done it before.

They killed 3000 or so of them in 2001.

You're probably right about it having happened at times, but this particular instance just screams conspiracy theory to me.

Oh agreed, definitely. I guess I was more springboarding off your post than challenging it. Don't you hate when ***holes do that?

The circumstances of Michael Hastings death is peculiar indeed. Have you watched this presser yet?
