You may well be right - and I agree that he has huge potential.
Re top end salaries though, some contracts in the K are huge. Isn't Radulov earning something like $9M. And it was rumoured that they offered Kovalchuk and Ovechkin crazy money to stay after the lockout.
Bottom line is that it is a risk, no matter what the player says in interviews
Agreed. I guess it all comes down to whether he is worth that risk or not. Seems that is where me and you will have to agree to disagree.
There is a strong case to be made here IMO. And I understand the opinion of the Flames not trading any of their own first round picks during the re-build but you are essentially trading top ten pick next year for a top ten pick this year.
And if this years draft is one of the deepest in a decade why not draft twice in the top ten now? Who knows how next years draft pans out and it could be shallow.

Maybe I should say top eight.
I'm with you completely. Sure it's a risk but if this draft is much better than next year, you could accelerate the rebuild with two potential difference makers.

Except that:
1) you have to significantly overpay because the other team is accepting both a delay, and significant uncertainty, and
2) in all likelihood, the Flames are drafting even higher next year. Remember that, not only is it year 1 of a rebuild, but goaltending is a huge question mark.
That is a foolish trade IMO. When you try to rush things, that is when you make bad decisions

I'd be okay grabbing Nichushkin if they're out of the top 4 (I wouldn't be at all disappointed with Monohan or Lindholm though) and I'd be simply ecstatic if they could move up and grab him with the Blue's and Penguin's firsts depending on what else they gave up.
I would be hesitant on giving up their first next year. I have a habit of liking legacies too much, I don't know why and it's a problem, but I'd love to see Sam join his brother on this team. While other legacy, William Nylander Altelius, doesn't look halfbad especially if he adds some size (bonus points for his dad mocking Edmonton and being born in Calgary). Throw in a couple other players like Ekblad, and as long as the Flames really tank I think they could grab a special player in that draft without that huge Russian-factor risk that comes with Nichushkin.
'Schkinner is currently in Sochi with the Russian U-18 team. From the IIHF page:
Quote:
Eighteen-year-old Valeri NICHUSHKIN (RUS) plays left wing for Traktor Chelyabinsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He is big and strong, skillful with the puck and considered a top-five pick in the NHL draft. He was whisked in by private jet early on Thursday after his KHL team lost the final to Dynamo Moscow.
Hoping that might explain why he only has 1 assist in the tournament so far.
If Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, Barkov, Monahan, and Lindholm are all picked before the Flames make their pick, I'd be pissed if they passed up Nichushkin.

But keep in mind that both those players chose to return to NA. You still can't beat the quality of life in North America, and the NHL is still head & shoulders the best league in the world.
After watching some of his videos, there's something about this guy's skating. There's something distinctly elite about it -- Ala Jagr, Selanne, Malkin. I am not a pro-scout so I can't elaborate much more than that but Nichuskin looks like he will be an elite superstar.

And just because you call him a beast of man multiple times doesn't make him a good prospect.
Watch the video I posted above.
Seth Jones @ 2:40
Ryan Murphy @ 5:30
Do I have to do everything for you or do you ever do something on your own without posting the same useless pessimistic opinion about everything?
Also watch what he does to JT Miller @ 3:35...that is where the strength and just being a beast comes into play....Oh he's also a beast because he backchecks like a bull as well.

I watched the video and he does not make them look like bantam level defenders. He makes a nice play are we now drafting guys based on them making a nice play or two? I would hope we would look at more things than just a highlight video with okay plays on it.
Also not sure how my post was pessimistic at all but since you seem to ignore what people post pointing out how wrong you are I don't really expect you to actually read what people post.

main thing ppl are posting are just how scared they are because he is a russian.
wow...since when did any success come without taking risk. the payoff with this guy is massive.
Also you talk about how they are just "nice play or two"...I don't see any one of the current draft eligible players playing with that much strength, tenacity, skill in all aspects...whether it is beating a defender, backchecking, getting past a check. the guy is a physically gifted bull. you pick them over runts like RNH every single day of the week. Look at where RNH is now..getting shoulder surgery. Guy will bust.
