About 1/3 way down...click the pic...right behind Brad Church and Petr Buzek
"Sleeper pick in the first round...not likely to ever be a star" Quite an understatement with hindsight!!

He might have been given that rating during the midseason prospect issue that followed that draft, and after he had been traded to Calgary. Iginla's coming out party was the 96 world Juniors.
I think he was always considered a safe pick. Knock was that he was a WHL guy, and they didn't tend to be big scorers. In those days scouting publications had a lot of guess work. A place like the Czech Republic had that new shiny feel.

He slipped so far because he was in a very serious car accident that year and broke pretty much everything.

I want four first rounders. Proceed to draft Mackinnon, Rychel, Horvat, Domi. Four centres should be enough to solve our depth at centre ice

slight overkill much? Haha.
In my mind, in a perfect world, the flames pick 1st or 2nd, pick up Drouin or Jones, and then put a package together to get an 8-12 pick, and pick up one of the centermen available there, a la Lindholm or Mohanan.

Perfect world? That's not perfect.
Perfect would be picking up another first from a bubble team, winning the lotto with that pick after they miss the playoffs, with our pick being 2nd overall already.
1st overall - Seth Jones
2nd overall - Nathan Mackinnon
...or vice versa.
Let's the chips fall where they may after that.

Talked to an NHL Euro scout today: "If Nichushkin isn't selected either first or second overall, it's only because of the Russian factor."

Yeah that Russian looks excellent. Alot of size, speed and excellent shot. Looks a bit like Malkin in his skating.

I don't care how good he could be. He may only play in the KHL for all we know. Stay as far as you can unless we get another mid pick and get him in the 15-20 range.

Nicushkin is a big reason why it would super to have another mid round(ish) pick.
If he were to drop I would have NO problem taking him, IF it was with their second pick in this draft.
Too risky to nab him with our own first rounder IMO.

I guess I should have said "My tempered expectations perfect world"! But you're right, that would be ideal. Jones/Mackinnon or something like that would be completely crazy :P

I would only take him if we have 3 1st round picks, can't waste the extra on a Russian.

Now that the Iginla drama has faded I'm really excited about the draft and to see who we get. It sounds like the Flames may finally get that centre provided they have at least a top 5 pick which it looks like may happen.
Also, for those that are commenting on Nicushkin....keep in mind that Washington selected Kuznetsov 26th overall in the 2010 draft most likely because of the Russian factor so there may be a chance the Flames could get him with their Penguins pick.

In terms of NHL ready:
1. Nichushkin
2. Barkov
3. McKinnon
4. Jones
5. Drouin
Barkov and Nichushkin both play in mens leagues and have had success. Nichushkin playing in the KHL I see him being the most likley to slot in right where NHL teams would project him. Barkov could slot in with sheltered minutes and the rest may need a little longer to develop and play against some experience and size.

Nichushkin is signed in the KHL for two more years
And someone posted taht Barkov has 2 years of military to serve - don't know if that's true, but it is standard procedure for Finns
All 5 of those players are NHL ready though

Sounds like a Feaster/Weisbroad type move, thinking outside the box.
