Loubardias was the best of the recent pbp.
Kerr is improving
Millions while knowledgeable just doesn't have the voice or pattern of speech for a pbp guy.
Hockey is not soccer or the nfl. It deserves pbp guys with character.
After reading the discussion had to post this. Watching the Flames Columbus game I saw Kerr acting buffoonish but I think the camera was not supposed to be on the crew and it cut away quickly. 36:41 remaining in the game recap on gamecenter
For a play by play guy, he seems to only call the play like 30-50% of the time. The rest of the time, while the play is going on, he is talking about some random stat or player.
On the bright side, I think he has a good voice for the job.
This. He calls the game as if he's explaining it to a 2 year old.
I hate the stupid play call and ridiculous 'scooooooorrrreeeessss', but his inability to actually call the play as if he was calling it for educated hockey fans ticks me off more.
There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and people complaining about whoever is calling Flames games currently.
Frankly, I've always found it bizarre. I liked Millions. I REALLY liked Loubardias. And I like Kerr; I enjoy his little quirks, it makes the game more fun to watch.
This is an entertainment product. He's not covering global conflicts or natural disasters--it's hockey. I like that he has fun, because it reminds me that WE are supposed to be having fun when we're watching.
I can't disagree more. Maybe because we haven't had it good for a long time that this sort of mentality seeps into our consciousness.
Listen to a guy like Sam Rosen and you will know what great TV hockey PbP is like. Then listen to Kerr. It isn't even close.
I also like his style of mixing some info to the game. The play is on the screen, we don't need the pbp guy to tell you what is on tv.
this. To me it has always been baffling how NA commentators would really describe what's happening ... that's not common here in Europe. We can all see what's happening, I don't need the guy to point out every single thing.

I agree, radio guys like Peter Maher have to paint the visual picture for you, the guy sitting in the car, to understand what's going on.
TV guys don't have to say as much. I'd rather they tell more stories.

It would be a big departure from the norm, but I would love more insight too. Explaining systems or critiquing plays in a more regular basis. Trouble is, I think there would be too many silent spots like soccer. Hockey is a fast paced energy game, not sure how that would work.
On the other hand, that's a great point to say to those who incessantly complain about the pbp. Watch the f'ing game and forget about the guy describing what you see
At first I thought Kerr was a pretty good radio host for the afternoon radio show/pre- & post-game shows, and an excellent Overtime host.
After a while he brought nothing new to the air at all, and became clearly irritated at having to do Overtime (to be fair, the quality of the callers can be really bad at times), and the show became a shell of what it was when he burst on the scene.
As for his TV gig, I think it's somewhat obvious that this is a case of Sportsnet being stingy with the dollars and hiring somebody on the cheap. He was already a Rogers employee at The Fan960, and I'm sure his salary demands (if that conversation even took place) couldn't have been much. For a guy like him, if you're offered a PBP job, you take it. So if you dislike Kerr, save some of that hate for Sportsnet.

That doesn't work in hockey. It's just too fast paced, and scoring chances often develop in a matter of a couple seconds. You see it sometimes from Kerr...
"and he started his career with team X and then moved on to become the...and Glencross just scored!".
The story telling is just comes off bushleague in hockey, as the PBP guy ends up cutting himself off all the time because something exciting is happening on the ice. Where as with a sport like soccer, you can see a play developing way in advance, and there is very little actual "action", so the storytelling works.
What I can't understand is how people can spend a significant amount of time and thought complaining about Rob Kerr for a job that they, themselves couldn't do. This is why I don't bother going to games. Iv'e been given the stink eye for making noise in the lower bowl. Rob Kerr is refreshing and make watching on TV fun. Would you all prefer the CBC broadcasts where they all try so hard not to be bias just to end up being more bias towards the team playing the Flames.

You don't have to be better at the person who does their job to express dissatisfaction in their performance. If contractors do a crappy job on your house, you complain. You don't go "oh well, I couldn't do any better, so I guess I should just keep my mouth shut".
He's a proffessional, and took a position as a broadcaster for one of Canada's 7 NHL teams. That's right near the top of his field, save for national PBP guys. It's not like he's covering a junior B team on local radio.
When you take a postion like that, you open yourself up to critisism, especially when you struggle like he has.
