Not to defend Burke too much, but the Kessel trade would not even be in the top 3 for worst trades by the Maple Leafs in the last 30 years. Kurvers for the pick that turned into Scott Niedermayer would have to be the worst trade. Second would probably be Russ Courtnall for John Kordic, third might be Rask for Raycroft. Honorable mention to the Leafs getting Cory Cross for Freddy Modin.

Kessel is likely going to be a 30+ goal man for the next 5-6 seasons, he is not exactly a terrible offensive player.

RT @TSNBobMcKenzie: Dave Nonis is the next GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unclear whether that is interim or unconditional appointment.

Does no trades allowed include no discussion of trades? Maybe there was something tabled between the Canucks and the Leafs that would be called in immediately after the new CBA became effective?

Feaster was on the Fan the other day saying that he had been talking to other GMs... obviously prior to the new CBA being ratified.

Is that why Nonis follows Burke around? He knows eventually Burke will be fired and he get's the job.LOL

What do you mean? You can't fire a GM for not making plans on making a trade? You do know the Leafs and Canucks have talked over the past year and that Leafs owners probably wanted Burke to put together a proposal and he likely disagreed. Not sure where you would come up with tampering as the way the Leafs choose to run their organizaiton has nothing to do wit collusion or tampering.

Any proof this is happening in Toronto too? Why is speculation allowed to be construed as fact when it involves the Leafs (or any other team), but the same speculation in regards to our team can be simply brushed aside because we don't want to believe it?

Beyond hacking into Jay Feaster's or Brian Burke's email accounts, how does proof of ownership reaching their fingers into hockey ops come out?

Maybe. I still credid Nonis for building most of the team Gillis gets credit for.

Quite possibly.

Perhaps it wasn't something they have been sitting on for 4 months and it happened recently?

There's no proof, that doesn't mean there aren't indications. If there's any lesson about hockey rumours, trade rumours, etc. in the NHL is that if there's smoke there's more than likely a fire.

A number of TSN reporters have stated publicly that Flames ownership is more involved that normal in hockey decisions. Choose to believe it or not, but don't make the claim that there isn't some basis to these sentiments.

Or they'll just come out and say Burke has been let go, Nonis is replacing him, goodnight.

What I'm saying is that, if the leafs and canucks had a deal in principle done during the height of the lockout, and Burke didn't want to do the deal (that couldn't be done).

The leafs obviously cannot fire a guy for not doing a trade that can't be done, HOWEVER, if they go ahead and fire burke in the middle of the lockout for being insubordinate, it's difficult to do that without drawing eyes to the potential collusionary or tampering charges.

For instance, you ditch burke in the middle of the lockout and legions of under worked sports reporters with editors to satisfy start digging into why.

Assuming the Leafs ownership can show some patience then the teams chances just got way better, Nonis I think is a great GM.
