Spits are playing like crap tonight. 13 shots over 2 periods. Sieloff not impressing but the rest of the team isn't any better. Lucky to be only down 2-0.

Anyone knows why Wotherspoon wasn't in the lineup?

LW Coda Gordon has 8 points in 6 games with Swift Current
D Brett Kulak has 4 points in 6 games with Vancouver
D Ryan Culkin has 6 points in 7 games with Quebec
D Patrick Sieloff has 3 points in 7 games with Windsor
Avangard Omsk beat Lokomotiv 5-2 today. 20 saves for Karri Ramo, whose record is now 7-3-2 this season. (Avangard overall is 7-5-2, as their other goalies aren't as good as Ramo).

Joni Ortio got his first shutout tonight, 34 saves. He's 4-2-4 2.37 91.96%.
Markus Granlund has 2+2=4 in 9 games, 16.21 average ice time.

Did Granlund miss training camp with his military duty?

I don't know. Haven't followed them at all. It's possible that he missed a couple of things, I suppose, but usually they're very accommodating with athletes. Tough to say how much the service affects a player's preparation. I'm sure it varies between individuals.
HIFK's coach left suddenly in the summer, so there's also a new coach for a young player to prove himself to. Seems like he's getting second-line ice time. I don't know how he's looked on the ice. In any case, it's a small sample size and a young player struggling at the beginning of the season isn't uncommon (although this season a bunch of teenagers appear to be making their mark early on).

BC played the University of New Brunswick in an exhibition game. Gaudreau and Arnold both had a goal each.

Last night:
Brossoit: 27 saves in a 4-1 win vs Saskatoon
Gordon: no points in a 2-1 win vs Regina
Culkin: 2 assists in a 7-2 win vs Rimouski
Again, Wotherspoon didn't play for Portland.

I know a girl who lives in Finland and cheers for HIFK. She said this to me last night so I figured I'd pass it on:
I have to tell you that Joni Ortio's been amazing lately. It took him a few games to get used to the new environment, but now he gives the team a chance to win every night. Unfortunately he's just about the only guy on the roster whose performance deserves positive attention. There are only 1-2 goalies better than him in the league at the moment, and he's by far the youngest (the others are over 10 years older than him).

Brossoit led the way for the Oil Kings with 2 assists last night. A true offensive catalyst.

Culkin had a goal in a 4-2 loss today.
That's 2 goals and 8 assists for him in 8 games. He currently leads all defenceman in the QMJHL in points.

Killer 5th round pick so far. I wonder if he can keep that pace throughout the season?

Doubtful. When was the last PPG+ Dman in the CHL? Drew Doughty?
So I looked it up, Dougie Hamilton was well over 1 ppg last season. Crazyness.

PPG d-men aren't that rare in the CHL actually. Some of them don't pan out into anything either.
Ryan Ellis was almost 2 PPG in his final year of junior LOL with 24 goals, 77 assist for 101 points in 58 games.
A few years back John Carlson, PK Subban and Michael Del Zotto were all above PPG.
The OHL seems to have higher profile d-men end up PPG. Many of the WHL highest scoring d-men and QMJHL highest scoring d-men aren't elite NHL prospects. Each league often has 3 d-men above PPG numbers from what I can see.
Doesn't take anything away from Culkin however, nice numbers for a kid his age.

Never want to be a damper on prospects. Especially when there is no other hockey to get excited about. But I would take Culkin with a grain of salt. He is on the best offensive team in the QMJHL and it is just 8-games in.
Still a positive sign and definite development from last season.

But weren't these guys you mentioned all first round picks? IF (big IF) Culkin keeps it up, that's impressive as a fifth rounder.

Subban was a second round pick. But i agree that if he can't keep it going it would be very impressive.
