I've though long and hard about it, and even as an iPad 1 user from day 1, I'm in no rush to get the new iPad, because the higher resolution is really the only new thing going for it. To say I need an iPad 3 because the iPad 1 screen is insufficient would be to also say every single other computer I own is insufficient display wise - the iPad 1 already has a screen close in resolution to my daily driver, a 13" MBP.
I'll wait until my current iPad can no longer run the current version of iOS (which is admittedly coming..iPhoto is already iPad 2 only, for example, and I expect many apps will go that route when iOS 6 hits), but until then, Mail, Calendar, Omnifocus, Safari, Twitterrific, Screens, Kindle, Navigon, Rdio, TuneIn, the Music app, etc, all run as well on the device I own as they will on the new device. With no new API's exposed on the new device (it's running iOS 5.1), the core functionality of those apps isn't going to change anytime soon. The only feature I really miss right now is Airplay screen mirroring, and I can live without that.
I'm glad Canada got included on launch day, and I know you guys are gonna love your new shiny, but I'm content to wait and let you have at the limited launch supply I'll probably look at getting one in the fall.
Heck, my iPad 1 is still under warranty until March 27th, and I've had it since launch

Anyone try getting one using their EPP (Employee Purchase Plan)? For us they only show the 16GB version and not the 32GB or 64GB.

I'm getting one. The retina display is what I wanted last year with the iPad 2. Love retina on the iPhone 4, the hands on reviews all gush over that screen. So apple found my personal weak spot on this one.

The one i checked (Used to work for em) shows all models available, at 13$ off (at least on 32gb wifi)

Holy cow, you're right. I've never heard it referred to as anything other, but it really is just Apple TV.
I wonder if Apple not numbering the new iPad is an attempt to stave off perceived (or real) fragmentation. They want consumers to know that "this app runs on the iPad", and not "does this app need an iPad 2 or 3 or 4?". With everything running iOS 5 right now (the current iPod Touch, all shipping iPhone models, and all shipping iPad models), it would seem like a good idea to pursue this approach. I bet Apple secretly wishes the iPad 1 wasn't around, so they wouldn't have to label apps like iPhoto as being iPad 2 or higher only, as they've had to do with iPhoto, and a couple of games (a tiny number of games).

The apps you list suggest we use our iPads in different ways. I watch videos and look at a lot of photos with mine. Both tasks will benefit greatly from more pixels. I also read books on mine, and smoother text will be very welcome.
I do wish they had added some extra functionality to further justify my purchase, but at least my iPad 2 will still have decent resale value because it'll do everything the new one does. It just won't look as nice doing it.

For sure. For graphics oriented folks it will be fantastic.

This is pretty much the reason why I'm going to get a new one. While the feature set hasn't really changed the retina display is really hard to pass up. Peggle in super HD!!!

I ordered my first iPad last night, since I'm up in Fort Mac with super slow internet in my room I got the 64 gb 4G version. Must say I'm pretty excited, I wasn't sold on the iPad until this one came out. Hopefully they don't come out with higher storage capacities in this model since I was hoping for more memory than that.

So after that sob story saying I would hold off on getting one because I didn't need a new one right away, I ended up ordering one. I had some money stashed away for travel that I won't be using it turns out, so there was no compelling reason to wait simply for the sake of waiting.
For what it's worth, my estimated delivery date is the 16th but I notice if you were to order one now, the page at apple.ca now says for delivery by the 18th, so I suspect they are rapidly headed towards backordered status.

As far as I can see, the Apple tv "2" was never called that? the iphone "3" was the iphone 3G, as in, 3G capable, as opposed to the original edge model. the 3rd iphone was the iphone 3gs.
Posts above are correct about ancient apple and their numbers though, I stand corrected.
