That is not true. NHL teams retain the rights of a college player for the full 4 years of his athletic eligibility. It is only after the 4 years of athletic eligibility have expired that the player becomes a free agent. You get way more protection from an organizational viewpoint by drafting a college kid over a CHL kid. If they choose not to sign four years later they would become a free agent, the same way that Erixon would have entered the draft again if the Flames had not traded him. But a college kid can never decide to become a free agent any earlier than the 4th June 1st following his draft year. For instance, the Flames have Gaudreau's rights until June 1, 2015. Nothing can change that under the current CBA.

The rights to the player is longer, but I am thinking a college player would have more incentive to avoid signing a contract because they can become a UFA unlike a CHL player that can only re-enter the draft.

I guess, but they would have to wait 4 years. ie. Gaudreau is the Flames property until he is 22 (he would be 22 on June 1, 2015). So I guess the guy could be ready for the NHL and then say that he will wait an additional year or two to become a free agent, but I have never really heard of a player doing that. Even if he did, the Flames could just trade him to a team he is willing to sign with, like Erixon who only was willing to sign with one team, and still get something for him. I honestly have never heard of a college player continuing to play college hockey rather than sign a pro contract just to ensure they have free agent status. It is not like they can get more money, they are still restrained by the ELC clause in the CBA.

Flames better treat this kid well, cause he most likely will stay the full 4 years to gain strength.
I guess they can't sign him and have him stay in college? He would have to turn pro if he signs, correct?

Johnny Gaudreau with two assists, Bill Arnold also with an assist, as BC wins 6-1.
NCAA Frozen Four Final VS. Ferris State is these Saturday as BC is going for their 19th win a row @ 7:00 PM EST. ESPN2 and I believe ESPN360.com will have the game.
TSN2 will have a tape delayed of the final on Sunday morning @ 11:00 AM MT.

He would be a professional player then and would lose his NCAA eligibility. If I had to guess he does not play as a senior, probably actually turns pro after next season. But I would be shocked if he stayed all 4 years.

It happens.

At the end of the season, four years after he was drafted, Wheeler had yet to come to a contract agreement with the Coyotes. Given the option, Wheeler elected to become an unrestricted free agent despite a maximum entry-level contract offer from the club.[4]

Fair enough, for every Wheeler there are 10 Erixon's, Lombardi's and Stoll's, I would be more worried about losing a CHL guy for nothing.

Despite his size, he will be an impact NHL player down the road. What a 4th round pick.

Are the Flames allowed to offer him a contract this summer or do they have to wait?
That was a sick 3-1 goal!

It probably would be wise for Gaudreau to get his degree.
But part of that worries me a bit. All that time spent in Boston... maybe he'd refuse to sign with the Flames.
