Best goalie in the NHL last season...take your numbers, turn them sideways, and stick them up your candy ass. Markstrom was playing behind a rebuilding team

So to sign Hall you need to make a move or two.

This seems out of left field but I'd look at shopping BSD to teams with cap to burn.
But Ryan is a good candidate to shed dollars.

Term was one year too high but offset by the acceptable price. Little to complain about from my end if it’s only a year too much. Seven years would’ve been the killer.

The ideal scenario is having a prospect develop into a backup and then eventually a starter, while being cost controlled.
If you can't ever develop your own, you're always going to have to pay full market

Totally reasonable.
The obvious preferred netminder of this FA class. No assets given up.
Monster signing!

Or it means that as a fan base we have no idea how good secondary/specialist coaches are because we have literally nothing but 3rd hand data with no context to evaluate...

How does this look now for the rest of their cap space? Still lot of players to pay long term

Because we likely won't have a goalie ready until his last year anyways, and we didn't give him a 7th year. 37 isn't ancient in goalie years anyways, so I suspect he will still be a solid goaltender by then, but perhaps not a star. By that point he will be the 1B to groom the next guy and give us a veteran presence.
This is also the cost of doing business on the free agent market. To expect anything less means you don't get the player. Vancouver literally gave him less money and term and he said "no thanks". That cannot be lost on you.
I don't know if he's going to be an all-star going forward, but I am certain he's as legitimate a #1 goalie that you can find these days. This is what happens when you fail to develop a goalie internally, you have to pay for them on the market. This payment isn't egregious. It's 100% appropriate and will likely be full value for the bulk of the term. You can't ask much more than that when signing a UFA these days.

I totally get it, but the reality of the situation is that basically every goalie today got term that took them to 36/37.
If the Flames can generate some playoff success in the next three years all the cap trouble that comes from then on would be welcome.

Okay, goaltender done. Was hoping for a little less, but we'll see how it plays out. Now have to get Hall done. Get that, then we can move Gaudreau and hopefully fill a hole on defense and a young center, saving some cap space to sign Mangipane and a couple of defensemen. I think Ryan has to go too, but we're getting there.

Also - I am happy they went this route instead of paying a first round pick for Kuemper. I feel like that is something the Oilers may end up doing.

This is almost identical to the deal Kipper had. The difference is that Kipper was a Vezina winner prior to his deal. Is Markstrom that proven?

His 6AVV puts him 9th league wide behind Hellebuyck (6.16), Murray (6.25), Gibson, Rask (7), Fleury (7), Vasilevsky(9.5), Bobrovsky (10), and Price (10.5)

+$2,333,000 more for per year for Markstrom compared to what Talbot got is money well spend imo
