Johnny is an excellent top line winger.
Monahan is an excellent top line C.
Which statement is more true?
IMO Johnny is fine. We just need to upgrade on Monahan so he could then replace Jankowski.
Hard to get a big top line C though. Maybe they go after some older guys as a stop gap. Doesn't have to be a huge scorer, just a big guy that can gain the zone and drive play.

See what you could get for Jankowski before moving a consistent 30 goal guy signed to a good deal for 4 more years.

Buy out Neal. Trade Brodie, Jankowski, Frolik, Stone to clear up some room. Keep Monahan. Pay Tkachuk.
I wonder if Monahan can play top line wing if a good centre can be acquired, as opposed to being a 2C?
Of course, there's the rub. What elite centre is (a) available and (b) can fit the cap even with some room created, given Tkachuk's likely demands?

A) Jankowski probably wouldn't get anything of significance
B) Flames are in a cap crunch and wouldn't be able to afford a Gaudreau, Monahan, Duchene, Stamkos, Tkachuk, Backlund top-6 combination
C) Without Gaudreau, I actually don't think Monahan would be hitting 30 goals a season and thus wouldn't be earning his salary

You have to fleece someone for that to happen unless you really gamble on potential

What center can we get for Joe Colborne err I mean Jankowski, Brodie and our 1st ? Doesn't need to be quite as good of a pure goal scorer as Monahan but it needs to be somebody well rounded with a 200 foot game that can create space and compliment Johnny more so Monahan and Backlund can be pushed down.
Edit: How cheap would Kopitar retained come considering we dont want to spend much and most of the younger options are on contenders that wouldn't want to move them?

Send Gaudreau to Philly for their 1st and Couturier.
Send Jankowski and our 1st to NJ for Hall.
Send Monahan to Buffalo for Reinhart
Send Brodie to Florida for Hoffman
Promote Valimaki full time
Send James Neal to the moon.

Trade Monahan for a 1st round pick and a blue-chip prospect.
Sign Kevin Hayes.
Hayes is best buds with Gaudreau, is huge, skates far better than Monahan, and can carry the puck. In my view, it won't be worse, and we'll be up whatever we recoup trading Monahan.

Taking a while to get to 5000

^ Don't need to move Monahan to get or afford Hayes.

We afford to keep Monahan because there is no Stamkos trade happening. I don’t like trading a 25 year old for a 30 year old either.

I think Monahan's poor footspeed, injury problems, and poor possession numbers make him a prime candidate to sell high on. I don't think we need his goalscoring.

Hayes isn’t an upgrade on Monahan either and likely costs $7M per to consider coming here.

Is he a downgrade though? Because if we can replace Monahan's contributions with something as effective (perhaps in different areas) in free agency, we're just smart asset managers.

A lot of people don’t seem to factor this in. For me, it’s about the whole picture. Adding two 1st liners and subtracting 1 is ultimately an upgrade.
