The design they did pick for the NMC was far from my first choice of the finalists too, but I have to admit after looking at it some more (and going to the more in depth event about it 2 years ago at the Uptown Theatre) I have really come to like it. I just hope they can get the thing built, shovels supposedly in the ground this fall.

I know who the winner actually was, but was nixed at the last minute by the main source of funding for the project. I can tell you here that the design that was selected was not the one that was wanted by most of the people in charge.

Was it the sleek black and wood looking one that spanned across the street? If so, I want to cry. I loved that design.

SPF's design? No. Nice concept, though.
The preferred submission, from what I gather, was DSR / Kasian.

Here was SPF's:
Here was DSR / Kasian's:
From what I gather, the team that understood the needs of musicians and music development the most was the latter. The selection committee loved Elisabeth Diller (hence, Diller Scofidio + Renfro = DSR).
Just as an FYI, DSR were the architects on the old trainline running through NEW York City that was changed into an urban eco-park.

^ Funny enough the East Village's Riverwalk is nominated alongside the High Line as the best new open space in North America.
Riverwalk is a gem - beautiful design and flattering to be mentioned in the same sentence as the High Line, which is an amizing place.

I too liked the SPF design the best of the bunch for the NMC, but I think the Allied design will also be a great addition. Had the pleasure of meeting the architect when I was down in Portland a couple of months ago.
As for the Peace Bridge, I think it's absolutely fantastic. It's an amazing structure.

I don't know if this post is related to mine or not, but I said the "non-sole sourced bridge", i.e. St. Patrick's Island.

The inside of the Kasian one is nice ... but the outside is what I meant with the Cubist comment

I doubt it will be imploded, to costly compared to conventional demolition for such a short structure.

Says in the article there may be another hotel going up a block south of there too, on 12th Avenue.
This is in addition to the new Hilton announced for the East Village, which already has a concept rendering as well.

I used to live in Keynote across Macleod from that old house... what's the story behind it (ie. why is it still there?).
Pretty decent location for a hotel. Nice and close to the casino, close to the Saddledome and Stampede Park.

That would be the hotel on the Stampede grounds, nice to see that they have plans to move ahead with theirs too. They do have a nice chunk of space on the NW corner of the park there, right now it is just parking and the entrance to the underground parking at the casino.
Plus there is also the proposal for the hotel on 13th avenue just across the street too. It would be a huge benefit to the BMO Centre to have 3 hotels in such close proximity, bolstering the benefits of using the centre for conventions and trade shows.
