Someone on reddit mapped out the firefight on Google maps. Beaumont is the setting, but it was filmed on the West Bank in New Orleans.

Firefight Map

Notice the streets on either side of the houses... Texas and Alaska.

Such a good show. Just watched ep 4. I find myself giggling at how good the dialogue and directing and acting is. Just so good. Amazing how far TV has come with shows like this and American Horror Story. Just amazing.

Interesting episode tonight, set up a lot of potential options for the remaining episodes. I liked the line (something like) "A friend of mine once told me time was a flat circle", after we saw LeDoux just saying that.

Starting to feel bad for other shows. True detective is just in another class right now.

Another riveting episode.

Man there's a lot of stuff going on in this. I searched for the yellow king and came across some interesting threads with interesting clues.
Pretty sure I'm going to watch the first 4 episodes again tomorrow.

I love the wardrobe/set design of this show...and the music too...This show has that "awsomely depressing" feeling (for a lack of better words). The same feeling I had when I watched Dexter season 1.

I have never seen anything by Matthew McConaughey ever. This guy is pretty good at acting.

Is there any significance to Hart wearing the Pink Floyd Division Bell Tour t-shirt?

I'm not much of a Floyd fan, but that album seems to be about communication, and there was also the Publius Enigma angle.

If Matthew McConaughey does not win an emmy for this performance then I don't know who should. Amazing.

Cohle obviously isn't the killer and likely disappeared off the grid to find the real killer. I think Marty is involved in some way, though not necessarily as the killer but as someone protecting the killer or the cult.

What I love about this show is we're getting an end in 3 episodes. All the mythology being set up will not becoming totally overblown like Lost or others, we will find out soon enough what all of it means.

^^^ This, I suspect that the big church group /governor/senator are covering up for a crazy family member, or it's a cult and not one person is the killer but the group for ritual sacrifice. And the two detectives are still actively on the case but off the books.

Now my big question is, are the two investigators neutral or on the take from the senators group.

You think Marty is involved with the cult? Interesting. I don't get that vibe but like anyone else I'm in the dark. If Rusty was really linked to the cult he would have killed Ledoux before Marty got onto the scene so I think it's fair to assume that Rusty is doing his own vigilante investigation. I got the vibe that some higher ups in the food chain like upper police management or politicians were involved somehow with the cult.

I'm assuming that pastor that was introduced (Tuttle? Not the guy from Boardwalk Empire in the field) with the governor? is involved just because they introduced him and then you don't see him again.

5 episodes in and it is contending with my all time favorites. I'm sickly excited at the conclusion. I'm so intrigued to see what the truth is, but I'm not ready to surrender these characters and this narrative.

Home run, HBO.

I hope the show is smarter than this. That would mean this show is nothing special and just another CSI spinoff.

The more I think about it the more I think Marty may be involved in the cover-up. It's possible he purposely shot Ledoux in the head to ensure he never talked. I'm thinking he may have been purposely paired with Rusty to keep tabs on the investigation and ensure Rusty never got too close to the real truth seeing as this seems to be a scandal linked to people in the position of power.

So we haven't talked about the satanic aspect of the plot very much yet.
when cohle describes the universe as a flat circle with us reincarnating into our same lives, he is implying that there is no free will, which is the main tenant of satanism.
"let do what thou wilt be the whole of the law."
basically they're saying if god is all powerful he will stop me from doing things that are against his will, and because of this mankind is justified in committing any deed.

cohle describes us sentient beings as horse carts moving around and around the surface of the flat circle. i kind of think this is the meaning behind the spiral symbol that we keep seeing.
The fact that cohle's comments so closely resemble the ideology of the cult make me think that he's dirty. Also the show is unbelievable and i can't wait.
