Is Mercer significantly better than Frost?
I know he's younger, but they have about the same ppg, with similar gp. Even of he's more well rounded, is he enough of an upgrade to spend (possibly) significant assets?
I don't watch Jersey, so these are legit questions.

A right handed center who has played in 82 games in all four of his seasons. He has played 62 more games than Byfield who was drafted #2 overall.
I think he'd be a good buy-low candidate with great contract control.

Young, cost controlled assets.

He means taking him as a cap dump to get said young assets for taking him.

Mercer feels like a perfect fit on this roster IMO. Nothing flashy but works hard. Could benefit from a change of scenery.

I think Frost will have better defensive metrics, but Mercer has far more offensive upside. I look at what Holloway has become in St. Louis, and I think Mercer could potentially match him offensively. Just my opinion.

Dallas needs to get younger. To me, any mention of Robertson or Ottinger on the block doesn't make any sense. They're both really amazing young players that you build around. No chance they're on the block when you have aging Seguin and Benn still on the roster trying to carry them.

Benn is off the books now as UFA. They'll likely look to move Marchment and Dumba first to clear space.

I’ve always liked Marchment- even back when he attended Flames camp as an invite.

There will be a cost to move Dumba, who was a healthy scratch in the playoffs for a dman who just cleared waivers.

The Stars D looked slow and struggled with moving the puck. I was surprised how ineffective heskinen looked.
The Stars need to work on their D.

Dallas also won't have to pay that guy Ceci who looks bad on skates and passes to the other team.

Trying to play match maker here but I wonder what the devils may want.
Perhaps Anderson, assume extension, and a young LW? Posposil’s name gets tossed around here but there’s likely some injury concern around the league on him, I think. On the other hand one of the Devils shortcomings is their lack of size up front, so perhaps they might like Posposil. I wonder about Zary too but I would think the Flames want an add coming back if he is included.
Anderson (retention and extension) and Zary for Mercer, Casey and a pick (assume 2nd round)? Was going to suggest Nemec but he is RHS and the Flames are sitting in a good spot there.

I think the Devils will keep their young d and trade Hamilton. I could see them wanting Rasmus to add a veteran d back to replace Hamilton.
Hamilton for a top 6 forward and picks then trade Rasmus 50% RS.
I also see them taking Zary and Rasmus for Mercer and a pick. Flames add Mercer, they don't need to add forwards and want picks. Devils want to get better ASAP

That's absolutely terrible for the Flames (even if the pick is next season's first round pick).

Anytime you get the most valuable player in a trade and a pick, how is it terrible? Mercer is a pretty significant upgrade on Zary, what are you expecting for Rasmus?

Is he though?
Mercer last season:
GP: 82
G: 19
A: 17
P: 36
+4
Zary last season:
GP: 63
G: 14
A: 20
P: 34
+12

Definitely more than a late first round pick next year. I peg his value at something like a first round pick this year and a good prospect.

Mercer is not the answer. I'd happily acquire him cheap but IMO not someone worth applying unseen value to.

Why is it terrible?
Flames, in all likelihood, should/need to trade Anderson. They also don’t have enough room for all the LW/LHS forwards they’ve accumulated over years of ‘BPA’ thinking.
The biggest need the Flames have is a RHS C, with top 2C upside, under the age of 25.
Dawson Mercer:
Under 25: check.
RHS C: check.
Top 2C upside: check.
Feel free to let us know if there’s a better fit out there for the Flames. You have to give to get.
