That would be about the stupidest thing the Jays could do.

No point in ditching Rios if they're gonna waste a year of Snider's entry-level contract years.

EDIT: It wouldn't actually surprise me considering they wasted a year of Snider at 400k by calling him up a week or two before the roster expansion last season (on a team with no hope in hell of making the playoffs).

It's actually hilarious.

Instead of taking advantage of Rios' last two arbitration eligible years they sign him to a 6-year, end-loaded deal to avoid losing him in free agency. Now, two years down the road, they let him go for no compensation when if they just played the arbitration game they would've been able to let him go as a free agent this winter and reap the compensation draft picks.

How does JP still have a job? I honestly believe I could do a better job and know very little about baseball.

That's the question nobody knows the answer to. Fack, I'm still red hot over this move. So damn dumb.

Can someone please let me know how this waivers thing works? Because I thought guys were put on waivers to gauge interest across the league, and then a trade could be worked out based on said interest. Could Toronto not have just kept Rios and put him back on waivers?

Waivers are recallable. If a guy is claimed his team has 1 business day (or something like that) to either work out a trade, let him be claimed, or keep him. JP failed at #1, so he went with #2, as #3 was too expensive (supposedly).

Jays had three options when a player is claimed on waivers

(1) pull him off waivers
(2) work out a trade with the team that claimed the player
(3) Let him go via waivers

So basically not a single trade could have been worked out with Chicago? I find that hard to believe. Crazy.

Putting him on waivers again would serve no purpose.

The selection order would be the same as before and the White Sox would simply claim him every time to avoid a team ahead of them in the standings claiming him.

Toronto didn't have to trade Rios or let him go, but the White Sox, by claiming him, were obligated to take him. Clearly the White Sox called JP's bluff and told the Jays they weren't willing to give up anything for Rios and JP bought it.

Imagine going back to 2007 and telling Toronto sports fans that Alex Rios + Justin Pogge = one sixth round draft pick.

Booooooooo!

Sort of a boring game really. But I suppose that is what happens when your team loses.

I have no problem letting that piece of crap Rios go for nothing. Finally that idiot who does the Jays Call in show after the games can stop telling callers how Alex is a future hall of famer and how the Jays think so highly of him. I've never seen a player take so many lazy at bats in a season. Now if anyone would ever take Wells and JP.

It could have apparantly, but the White Sox either A) wanted JP to eat part of Rios salary or B) deal salary back. JP wanted neither of the two and choose to have the entire contract off his books than keep any dead money or a player he didn't want.

It makes sense, but i still don't like it. I also have a hard time believing the Jays are going to use this money and sign a big name FA to replace Rios. For all the flack he got, he was still likely go hit 20 ish home runs and fall right in around 90 RBIs with about 20 stolen bases. Thats not easy, or cheap, to replace. yes they have other needs but I don't think they can afford them. I wish he would put Wells on waivers and see if a team woudl claim him rather than put Rios on waivers.

Well it seems, judging from Ken Williams comments on Sportsnet, that there was some pre-existing interest in Rios from the White Sox. It didn't seem to be super high, but the way he was talking, it seemed like they could have gotten SOMETHING.

So yeah ... down with Ricciardi.

If they could have gotten something, they would have at the deadline. Rios contract gone is what we got in return

I'm still baffled how you don't get ANYTHING back for this guy....

Sure the White Sox had interest, and as JP put it "...we couldn't get the players we wanted before July 31..."

Well take some OTHER PLAYERS then....take on SOMETHING....you big effing buffon.

this "financial flexibility" crap is such a load of garbage. they just signed the guy to that deal. I don't care is rios stayed or went, but when the justification is just dumb with respect to the events that lead up to the situation, then I have an issue. kind of a clown show.
