Frick, another one that I thought was picked already.

Man, I need to comb through the Draft board again.

The Ben Stein classroom moment ("Bueller? Bueller? Bueller? .... Anyone?") is a moment my friends and I quote constantly, particularly if there's ever any awkward silence.

First, I'd like to thank octo for giving me an idea. For one of my wildcards, I'll select the actual greatest teen movie of all time:

The Breakfast Club

One of John Hughes' best, most of the cast peaked with this movie. A great story that defined a generation of teenagers. I watch it whenever it's on.

In the 17th round of the CP Movie Draft, Direct2Video selects Fritz Lang's M (1931) in the Foreign category.

Some really great quotes about "M" by Roger Ebert:
Quote:
When you watch "M,'' you see a hatred for the Germany of the early 1930s that is visible and palpable...the entire movie consists of men seen in shadows, in smokefilled dens, in disgusting dives, in conspiratorial conferences.
Quote:
Many early talkies felt they had to talk all the time, but Lang allows his camera to prowl through the streets and dives, providing a rat's-eye view. One of the film's most spectacular shots is utterly silent, as the captured killer is dragged into a basement to be confronted by the city's assembled criminals, and the camera shows their faces: hard, cold, closed, implacable.
A trailer/montage:

Team Pineapple Express has no idea what round it is, or what pick this would be, but would like to select in the prestige category of Wildcard #1, the great cult film Boondock Saints.

IMDB's simple explanation of the film:
Quote:
Fraternal twins (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) set out to rid Boston of the evil men operating there while being tracked down by an FBI agent (Willem Dafoe)
Youtube goodies:
(Most of these clips are probably going to be NSFW)

The Official Trailer:

"There was a fire fight!"

The courtroom Scene (***Spoilers, don't watch if you haven't seen the movie and you don't want it ruined*** You have been warned)

If I were able to rid myself of Super Troopers, Ferris would have been mine ages ago.

Breakfast Club is amazing, and Boondock is underrated!

With our 17 rd. pick, we are proud to select, in one of our Wildcard categories... Jim Carrey's magnum opus - a performance that should go down in history as one of the worst snubs in oscar history... A film showing a downright creepy amount of foresight, offering a glimpse into the extreme extension of our current obsession with the "reality" of "real" people. An underrated film from an underrated director, featuring an underrated and under-appreciated performance... 1998's The Truman Show!

What I love most in the Truman show is the subtleties. The nuances of performance and direction in the quiet moments. They contrast brilliantly as the subtext to the exaggerated phoniness of Truman's world and his persona within it. Ed Harris was also brilliant in this movie, playing the creepy yet sympathetic God-like figure with great success. The music in Truman is some of the best you'll hear, as well.

Just a phenomenal film all around.

Darn, had that as one of my Wildcard picks. Definitely one of my favorite Jim Carrey movies, and one that I could watch over and over again (and do). This movie was definitely ahead of its time, and kind of spooky how a lot of the "out of this world" aspects of it have actually come true on the television screen since.

Also have to echo the love for Ed Harris. The part was originally held by Anthony Hopkins, but he had to back out and so Harris came on, learned the lines, researched the character, and shot his scenes...in two days. Really great job.

And Carrey...he proved so much with this movie. Really, it was the perfect fit for him to come out of his comedy-shell.

"And in case I don't see you: good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight!"

Alright here's my next pick, brought to you by Fall-Back Extra Hour Madness.

So, I have decided that I am going to go with a B-movie selection for my first wildcard pick, because... well, just for fun, I guess. To start off with, let us define "B-movie". According to the omniscient wikipedia.org, there are at least two definitions that I think fit the movie I am selecting here today:
1. "A B movie is a low-budget commercial motion picture conceived neither as an arthouse film nor as pornography." (link)

2. "A B movie is a low-budget genre film designed to play before a main feature or, in modern use, a low-budget film with modest artistic aspirations or of an unconventional, energetic style." (link)

I feel that my selection can be defined within the B-movie genre using the following selectively-designed amalgam of the above two definitions: "a low-budget motion picture with modest artistic aspirations, conceived as pornography." My pick for Wildcard #1 is the 1992 film Blown Away, starring Corey Feldman and Haim, and Nicole Eggert from TV's Baywatch. Most people here will recognize the Coreys - Feldman actually had some respectability for a while in the 80s; I think Haim's best work came in The Lost Boys - but I doubt many will have seen this trashy gem. I am picking it because I want to add a crappy movie to my team, and this movie is definitely crap - but it's endearing crap. I have seen it a few times over the years and although it is mystifying for its incoherence and stunningly bad acting, it is a great way to veg out for an hour and a half, most of which is given over to sex scenes.

"You know, Megan, you're turning into the same lying slut your mother was."

The plot: a woman dies in a fiery crash on a girl's (Eggert) birthday; girl turns into a slut; two brothers (Coreys) working at a ski resort become entangled in a web of deceit and unnecessary twists; girl gets naked and has a lot of sex; more absurd twists; laughs ensue.

Some of the things I love about Blown Away:

- car chase scene highly reminiscent (read: identical) to the one that takes place in Basic Instinct - which was released the same year and in fact has a very similar, albeit much more competently-conceived (not saying much), plot
- Coreys beat each other up and both get a black eye on the same eye.
- Corey Haim hides from Nicole Eggert's father by hanging off the edge of a third-storey balconey, which he then lets himself drop off of and walks away unharmed.
- in spite of a growing body count, authorities are unable to piece together a case and are indeed eventually written out of the equation entirely
- seemingly numberless unprovoked sex scenes entailing innumerable naked shots of Nicole Eggert, who was pretty hot in 1992
- really bad 'special effects' - fulfilling the "low-budget" aspect of its b-movie categorization (according to the trivia page on imdb, the car bomb sequence was lampooned at the 1992 MTV awards as a fake 'Best Explosion')
- Dialogue such as the following:
Megan (Eggert): What was the worst day of your life?
Corey Haim: That's a pretty morbid question right after mindblowing sex.
Megan: I wouldn't call that mindblowing.
Corey Haim: Oh gee, thanks.

The way this movie alludes to the asinine twists and turns it is obviously going to take is hilarious: witness one such scene where Haim introduces Eggert to Feldman, who is shown to be harboring some kind of malevolence with a slow-mo shot of him exhaling cigarette smoke (if you're like me, trying to see past Corey Feldman as the kid with glasses from Stand By Me orMouth from Goonies is an exercise in futility). The fact that this movie was remade in 1994 using entirely different actors and a completely different story should certainly be proof enough of how awful it truly is. Nevertheless, I am proud to add it to my team as a symbol of a bygone era of cinema - an homage to that once-illustrious Erotic Thriller section at the back of Blockbuster Video that for some reason never had any tapes in stock... I wonder why.

As to what this movie is about, or what it means on its own terms - your guess is as good as mine. I think that's the point.

...and the question you're probably asking - the answer is YES! It is on youtube (by request, apparently).

Alright... I gotta complete my round, so...

With the 434th pick in the CP Movie Draft, StrayBullet selects, "Can't Buy Me Love" starring Patrick Dempsey. "Can't Buy Me Love" will fulfill the Wildcard #3 slot.

"Cards with the tards!"

"Aww... He must be in Special Ed."

I figured if TSN and Sportsnet show it, it's a sport. Could have gone with a bunch of other ideas, but I liked Rounders, and seems like when I play poker, it's always brought up.

Plus, with such an amazing cast (Damon, Norton, Malkovich, etc), hard not to try and snag it.

A Christmas Story (1983)

It is the Christmas season in Northern Indiana and Ralphie, a young boy growing up in the '40's, dreams of owning a Red Rider BB gun. The movie revolves around this pursuit and how Ralphie tries to overcome the obstacles in obtaining this gift, mainly in the form of adults who bleat "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!"
