Trades like this are made every season for pure rentals..the fact that the Flames still have something in this trade tree is a win
Go look at what the Leafs have spent to win now

That's how it works, funny or not.

Oh I see it. I feel extremely bad for the leafs. He's making moves like their cap and future are not things.
He will get run out of town in a short period of time, they won't be as forgiving as us. And his :it was the owners" song and dance won't fly there

Jesus Christ.
The "win now" crowd for the most part isn't advocating that's the right approach, but rather accepting that's the reality of the organization's approach, and we can't control that.
This trade was fine value. They got strong production for 1+ season and recouped reasonable asset value by trading the player later.

Is it though?
You see what BT's doing to Toronto right now?

dude you're all over the place. You replied to "Go look at what the Leafs have spent to win now" by criticizing Tre, even though he's been there for about five minutes and all those "win now" moves were made by Dubas.
We get it, you don't like Tre.

Ah yes, the Flames didn't end up winning the cup so every move they've ever made was essentially the wrong move and I'm going to bump old threads and point it out and be a super annoying doosh nozzle.
Nothing to see here but an attention seeking hooo-er

Essentially, if your trade is only designed to be in your favor for 1 year and you don't win the cup that year, yeah. It's exactly like you said.
That's why trades should be designed to be favorable over a 10 year span.
Make a dozen 1-year trades and you end up where we are now.

Did you read what I typed? They got younger by trading Hamilton for Hanifin and Lindholm. Both are younger than Hamilton (and Ferland).

On average. How many players last 10 years in the league. For that matter how many GMs and coaches?

And however many players last 10 years in the league, the number that do it with one team has to be significantly smaller.

Flames looked like a cup contender, traded for scroing depth that fit under the cap and then recouped assets when they didn't win. Solid asset management. Probably didn't need a thread bump for those who can think through the events rationally. But sure, it's summer so let's argue to fill time...

Odds are Toffoli and Sharangovich will be the best players in the trade tree. Maybe one of Suniev/Heineman/Mesar* (or the next few guys chosen) becomes an impact player...it would be pretty sweet if it was Suniev!

Even if you're Team Rebuild (I am) the Flames were division leaders and looked like legit contenders for a Cup run. It was absolutely the right time to sacrifice the future for a win now piece.
It sucks that it didn't work out but that doesn't make it a bad call, even in hindsight.

Exactly they don't make that trade and they lose to Dallas in 5 everyone would be calling for heads.

Suniev would change everything. Would be full credit to Conroy and scouting staff for that, but yes it really would change the whole dynamic.
The first round pick is a little more complicated to evaluate than Mesar, because the Flames most certainly would have picked higher than him without this trade.
