The Dutchland Dangler :-) with 4 points tonight, I have been firmly in the Ekblad camp but am getting used to the idea that we are playing to fine of hockey to be able to draft him. So am really starting to think about others. Leon Draisaitl has really had a strong two months and is now putting up some serious points. I like what the sites are saying about him and his compete every shift attitude, I think he would fit into what Burke is trying to build here.

I think we're done with picking top 5. I'm fine with it. Virtanen, Ritchie, Fleury etc they will add to the pool.

Why do you think that? They are still firmly entrenched in 26th right now.

It's a 4-horse race for that 2nd overall slot. All we can do is keep cheering on the Flames while cheering on the OOT scoreboard and hope for 3-point games involving the Oilers, Panthers and Islanders.

Very little chance Calgary catches Carolina at this point.

It's going to be a battle for 3-5. I think Edmonton has locked in 2nd. They're far too inconsistent to put a string of W's together to crawl upwards.

FLA and the Isles can pass CGY at least. Luongo will steal more than a few games for them down the stretch.

I want 4th. I'm hoping the Flames can land 4th.

Only 6 points behind Carolina. If we're still in a 2nd place race being up 6 points on Oilers then the race with Canes is still on too.

Buffalo must be loving Ekblad building a consensus us at 1 and the Oilers sitting at 2 and not so secretly loving him. They'll be able to add assets for a guy they don't need and still get the guy they want (assuming they win the lottery of course)

I hope Buffalo c### blocks Edmonton and snags Ekblad. Then Edmonton picks Draisaitl.

I'd be okay with the 5th/6th spot. I kinda have a feeling someone will surprisingly fall to that place. Its so close between prospects this year that anything could happen

gonna be a very fun draft.

I don't see that, I can see Buffalo trading the #1 though if they believe the NYI are going to give them their 1st this year. Trading up to get Ekblad and blocking the Oilers would be even better.

Do people really see the Islanders giving up a top 5 pick in this years draft? I put the odds on that at virtually nil.

Much more likely would be them trading up with Buffalo to get Ekblad.

This is a team that offered all of their draft picks to move up in 2012, and traded away a first for Vanek. They are aggresive in trying to improve the team now. I can't see them wanting to give up a top prospect in this years draft just to get a 5% chance to win the McDavid lottery next year. That just makes no sense, even for the Islanders.

Basically every team in the bottom 5 needs a defenseman so it would not surprise me to see any of them trade up for Ekblad if Buffalo does indeed want to pass on him.

They have to give it up this year or next, no?

Might be smarter to give it up this year, top 5 or not. They aren't going to be a good team next year either and next years pick will be McDavid territory.

They played alright last season and even if they finish last in the league next year which is pretty doubtful, the chance to draft McDavid is 25% at best. If they fail to improve at all next season and finish 4th again they have a 10% chance at McDavid.

Would you give away Monahan for a likely 5-10% chance at McDavid?

That's basically what the Islanders would be doing passing on Bennett, Reinhart, or Draisital.

The Islanders are still in the East and have the worst goaltending in the league. Get Tavares back and a real goalie they are in the playoff race next year.

EDIT - if they had a league average percentage (.913), they'd have allowed 50 less goals this year which would put them at a +9 goal differential.

DOUBLE EDIT: .913 might the average goalie but the not average team (i.e. excluding empty net goals) but does show how awful their goalies have been.

I guess I'm more of a believer in the Islanders continued stupidity and suckiness then some. I don't think they'll give it up this year but it wouldn't shock me.

If I'm the isles and I have a top 5 pick, no way do I give it up to buffalo.

Sign a couple free agents and they could be back in the playoff hunt.
Remember, they made the playoffs last year with virtually the same line up as this year.

Who knows if last year or this year is an anomaly.
