Sounds just like Cascade Ponds at Banff. “Let’s go have a picnic with 50 of our closest friends and all our crap and music.”

I don't understand why people can't do things without music anymore. I definitely don't need music or a podcast everywhere I go but it seems like most people can't live without something being piped into their brains. At the office, bike path, park, airport, beach, golf course, etc I just don't get it.

Life is an endless sequence of misery that we're trying to take our minds off of.

That's why I started going further and further into the mountains to get away from people, last summer I hiked 52 km total carrying a 45 lb bag. Exhausting but you only run into a half dozen people, they're nice as hell and very quiet.

I hate it hiking, but the place I’m really surprised that allows it is golf courses. Don’t they want quiet there? They invented ear buds for a reason. No one else wants to hear your ####.

I actively make sure not to. Maintain manners. Be polite. Be patient.

But that doesnt go everyone and even my patience has limits.
I think the year off from society brought so many more people to the outdoors that it overwhelmed the ability to integrate people slowly so a lot of the cultural norms of the parks were overwhelmed.

You are still allowed to throw people’s Bluetooth speakers in lakes though if they are using them. It’s in the park rules.

Me too,

Random wilderness camping is pretty much all the backcountry I do any more. The ultra running crowd really changed the back country a lot. Not necessarily in a bad way but it just adds traffic.

I would laugh like hell if it was. Like...crudely etched onto the 'Park Rules' sign.

"What can you do? Its right there. They are legally allowed to launch your speakers into the Lake."

I read “homeless cosplay” and I don’t even need to see who posted it to immediately recognize the poster.

Rates have gotten so high that if you’re a public or semi private course they rarely do anything about disruptive people. Can’t hurt the cash cow.

True, I have seen more runners recently, but at least they're out of the way quickly and don't carry bluetooth speakers.

Last summer I did a brutal 21 km hike one way through a really overgrown and wet trail way up north on an old voyageur route, once at the river I spent an entire day sitting and watching bears in the distance and all the animals coming to to river. Pretty damn peaceful, didn't see a single person for 3 entire days.

Jeez, a few weeks ago we were out getting Chinese food and there was a family a few tables over. Both kids had their ipads out with headphones on and the father was sitting there with headphones on as well and seemed to be listening to music as he would bob his head every now and then. The mother was just sitting there looking bored out of her mind.
I could not understand how they could go out to dinner and just sit there not interacting with each other at all.

We are going to hit a point where all human interaction is binary aren't we?

When I was younger I would listen to music constantly, anytime I left the house. These days. I kinda of enjoy having nothing in my ear.

It’s not just hiking. Way more people play music from speakers while they’re riding their bikes. Often in a group of 3-4 people riding around blasting music with grins on their faces, seemingly oblivious to the contempt everyone else nearby has for them.
