Why would someone pay that much for a 3G when the 3GS is available? Where did you list it?

Because there are a lot of people who don't qualify for a subsidized 3GS, so a $400 3G becomes a lot more attractive than a $800 3GS.

Wow, so you pretty much upgraded to a 3gs and made money in the process. Well played.

How do you figure, if he's got a 3G he's got 2 years left on his contract so he would have paid the full price, $800 or whatever it is.

I suppose to say he made money is a little inaccurate. What I mean is that he managed to upgrade to a 32 gig 3gs for $300 (because he's either lucky or a wizard) despite not being on contract for a full year OR paying an average of $100 per month. By selling his 3g for $400 he's still ahead of the game in comparison to everybody else.

That's true, though I think selling it for $400 isn't really lucky, there are tons of people out there who want one but don't/can't get a contract... and internationally even more people that want an unlocked phone for less than full price.

Yeah. Cell phone value is a tricky thing. People see $199 and they think that's the price of the phone. It isn't though. That's just the hook to get you in the door. By the time you're done your 3 year contract @ $80/mo... that iPhone isn't looking so cheap anymore.
I get what Russic is saying, though. In about a week, I went from wanting to trade my 3G for the "right" to buy someone's subsidized 3GS... to buying the 3GS on my own for the subsidized $199 and then selling my 3G for $400.
With the beating I took on that Dell I stupidly bought and then resold 3 weeks later for $700 less... My mojo needed this deal.
Edit: Btw, I've had two more people email me since I posted about it being sold. Kijiji is win.

My apologies if this has already been mentioned, but one thing that bugged me (and was mentioned in the "find my iphone" blog story) is that the mobileme website isn't available on your iphone, you just get a redirect. In the story I posted, the guys tracked down the missing iphone using a laptop and a wifi adapter. Wouldn't it be easier to just use another iphone? The inability to get into me.com using your iphone would hinder this process. Unless of course you download a different browser from the app store. The redirect doesn't happen and you can use the find my iphone feature from another iphone. As more people around me are getting them this will be very beneficial.

When I said he was lucky I was referring to him snagging the upgrade at the subsidized price. I've been trying to do the same and I may have found a way in, but man o' man it's taken some effort!

Went to the Apple store today to inquire about my dust under the screen / cracked back / failure to recognize earphones plugged/unplugged problems, and they just swapped out my phone! Nice!
Then I went on Apple's website to find out about extended warranty since the warranty expires next month, only to find out they do not offer extended warranty (AppleCare) for iPhones in Canada.
Not so nice.

Hooray! After a few days of bending the rules via sharpshooter, I've managed to secure myself an upgrade to the 3GS for the subsidized price!
I'd like to thank Jesus .... for staying the hell out of my way.

Just in case anyone uses iPhone apps that use GPS.. without some apparent trickery, Apple are effing leotarded.. When the display goes to sleep, the GPS is turned off.
We just found this out and I'm pissed off. WHY would you make the display sleep kill everything else? It's a massive drain on the battery to force the display to render just to keep collecting GPS.
I want to burn Apple to the ground right now.

I wondered how you guys would get around that with your app. It must be possible. It's not like the Find My Phone feature wont work if the phone is asleep.
I'm sure most of the location based app creators would get together to bang on Apple to open up that feature for GPS. You should start emailing around.

Also.. A friend of mine just sent me a message about how FindMyiPhone is a stolen idea:
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...ery=PN/5764892
Filed in 1995. The company has apparently gone to Apple to present this idea, but Jobs wanted nothing to do with them.
Seems to me that he's only interested in thieving the technology and crushing smaller companies because he's an evil dick with more money..
My how the Apple hate can grow so quickly within me..

Nothing terribly shocking ... this happens all the time. I'm not so sure he sat around excited to steal the idea. I can't speak for anybody else here, but is the "find my iphone" feature really that much of a blockbuster idea? Did anybody else think of this right away when smart phones started having gps built in? My initial thought would be that Apple (or every other company they probably pitched the idea to) didn't see it as a viable option at the time.
This kinda reminds me of video game arguments where company x doesn't care about consumers all they care about is making money. What I don't get about the argument is that wouldn't making money be the primary goal of a CEO? People seem to like the idea of saying "this company is evil while this company is a shining beacon of all that is good" when really all companies do is try to gain as much value as possible.

Looking at kijiji, looks like i can expect ~$250 for my 8gig 2g iPhone. should help in the upgrading process.
and it makes sense, it all has to do with the contract commitment and being able to skirt around it
