Iginla wanted to leave, Kipper retired, and the team sucked despite trying to win. That's what forced the "rebuild."

If I remember correctly Iginla didn't want to leave, Feaster pushed him hard to come to that decision.

He was going to be UFA and had given the team very little indication that he was going to re-sign.

Nah, Iggy said he didn't want to be around for a rebuild
ironically the Flames would win a playoff round while he was missing the playoffs with the Avs a couple years later

Flames sign Kadri (7 years, $7m AAV)

I had quite a few people down my throat when I said that Kadri's two-way game was overrated before his first season with the Flames.
I wonder if anyone still feels that he is an elite/strong defensive presence.

He had one amazing trade. Which was Dougie Hamilton for Lindholm and Hanifin. And even that, Hamilton is lighting it up still so it’s not like it was a slam dunk. We all thought that the Tkachuk trade was amazing but that’s not turning out well. He completely bungled Tkachuk’s second contract which led to that whole situation anyways.
I could be missing something though. Maybe you are referring to Toffoli? Or Zadorov rights? Decent
His UFAs were simply terrible.
In hindsight he was a pretty bad GM tbh.

Even if you’re not contributing on the scoreboard, you have to do the little things right and be responsible defensively. -4 in Detroit can’t happen when you’re a leader on the team.

Warrener touched on that on their podcast. Huska is in a really bad spot. Sutter was an uber hard ass. Huska was brought in to lighten the mood. But how do you stay as the mr nice guy when your team is pumping out garbage efforts like the Detroit game.

one positive is that Kadri is 33 years old and is used to being a 2nd line calibre player. If he's gonna have 4th line production, I could see him becoming "allergic to his equipment" instead sticking it out as a poor NHLer

The other positive is it was signed by a gm who is no longer here. Makes it easier to trade/buy out.

Posting this during the Blues game, I get that he had a giveaway that led to a goal, but aside from that, he is one of the only forwards tonight that looks engaged.

Sean Monahan: 4 Goals, 3 Assists, 7 points in 8 games played, +4, 29 years old.
Nazem Kadri: 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 point in 8 games played, -10, 33 years old.
If we had traded them for each other straight up, we’d look like idiots - but the fact we have an outstanding debt that we yet to pay of a 1st round pick for the right to have Kadri over Monahan…
Teams don’t simply bounce back from such terrible decisions.

I see your Monahan reference and raise you a Gio: 1g, 1a, 8 gp, +2, 40 years old. Kadri for Gio? I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Gio and Monahan are on nice team friendly deals...nobody signs those here
The first back would be nice but Monahan wouldn't be in Calgary right now

The signed low contracts because they were UFA's without much demand.

Disagree with these ‘their fate is sealed’ type comments.
One could have said the similar things about the Bruins 2015 draft. Remember how badly the Sabres were fleeced in the Ryan O’Rielly trade?
Saying the Flames can’t bounce back from this is something you don’t know.

Gio wouldn't have signed anywhere but Toronto I bet.

Gio took a cut to stay in Toronto. Dubas said they were even willing to pay him more. He was still a good player at the time of signing eating tons of minutes.

so tired of hearing how hard he worked, you work that hard to hamstring the team for the next decade, impressive. Hope he drags the leafs down like he did the Flames
