If this seems too tight to squeeze in, maybe Treliving tries to trade both Bennett & Hanifin (again)
^ I would rather Brad do that than trade Johnny Hockey.

The whole point of signing Hall would be to shake up the Forwards and move out a Johnny hockey. Otherwise you have 20+M tied up in 3 Left shot wingers and you still have the weak as$ Center depth.

Likely but at this point im not sure it matters.
He has to know he isnt wanted in Vegas any longer and thats a pretty big motivation to waive and go to a team that does want you.
He won't be playing much if he stays where as if he goes up North he is all but guaranteed to play as much as he wants. Calgary was on his list too and he agreed a few years ago even though that fell through.

I think if Treliving was finished, we'd have a press conference scheduled

He did do an availability yesterday, pre-Tanev.
But I shall cling to this hope as well. C'mon Hall!

Yes, I’ve never seen a situation where you have both Gaudreau and Hall. The dollars don’t work, the ice time doesn’t work, the team makeup doesn’t work. Neither guy has played RW (and neither has Tkachuk to any great extent).

If the Flames can get Hall on a 6 year deal under 8.5 then I really think they should move forward with that and get the best futures based package for Gaudreau as you can while opening up the cap space needed to fit Hall in.
If you can move out Gaudreau, Ryan and Hanifin and replace them with Hall, Frost, Sanheim it is a good shakeup with longer term security on Hall and promising youth with Frost

I also think Rittich should be traded (he may also want a fresh start after Markstrom) and I hope there are teams out there that may be interested. Maybe Chicago, Detroit, or St. louis. Rittich has the potential to be a starter and is on the right side of age 30.
Then, I would replace those guys with: Gawdin + Dell . These guys should make a combined $2 MM.
The Flames will then save $3.88 MM which will give them some breathing space to make other big moves. Its also enough cap space to sign Hall and spend a few months to maneuver the cap with some trades.
|
To add to this, Olli Maatta was moved with LA taking on two-years at $3,333,225 and Ryan is a more useful player than Maatta with 1 year at a lower cap hit.

That is a very thin group and hoping a Kylington/Mackey/Poolman/Yelesin can just slide in and play full time minutes is a fools errand. Nevermind that we have no idea if Valimaki is ready for such a role yet.
Even WITH Hanifin there needs to be at least one more addition.
|
In my opinion, it's very hard to find real goal scorer, so off season is best time to try to get one. Especially if he is UFA.
I think this year is the year we need to try to go deep into playoffs.
We fixed G, so if we sign Hall we will be OK in F until trade deadline. And give younger D guys a little bit more ice time to see their future. And there are many veteran D's looking for jobs so sign a couple with cheap price.
Then during trade deadline make adjustment for pkayoff hockey. Find stronger C that can create some space for Johnny and Hall, find meaner D that can win battles and the cup is ours. See this is so easy.

I think Gaudreau or Tkachuk may can play RW.
Hall-Backlund-Tkachuk
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Lucic-Bennett-Mangi
Dube-Ryan-...
Monahan line will have lesser D, so hope they will score more this year.

I dont think we move Hanifin to try and fit Hall in. I still do not know if you can fit Hall in with only getting rid of Hanifin and Ryan. What would it cost to get rid of Lucic? I would be willing to part with a first and third this year, and even a second next year as well. Be trading those picks for Hall, if he says he is coming.

Gaudreau, Hanifin, Ryan out?
Hall, Sanheim, Frost in?
Hmmmm. I think I like that.
Especially when you factor in the picks they'd also be bringing in from moving Hanifin and Ryan possibly.

The one thing I love about Tre is he works like a maniac. He is always in on everything. Can he make mistakes? Sure but when you are in on so many things that is bound to happen. The Calgary Flames under his management has definitely been on the up and up in the NHLs eyes instead of rotting in the corner

With OEL off the market, Hanifin also makes sense in Boston.
Sign Hall.
To PHI: Gaudreau
To CGY: Sanheim, Frost
To BOS: Hanifin
To CGY: 2021 1st, 2022 2nd
Frost starts in the AHL, we keep Ryan.
Hall - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
UFA - Ryan - UFA
Robinson
Giordano - Andersson
Sanheim - Tanev
Valimaki - Kylington
UFA
Markstrom
Rittich
Bada bing.

A way out of this mess, acknowledging that we have a contract on the team that is crippling their ability to make a move to void $5.25M in salary.
Gaudreau ($6.75M) + 3rd for Gostisbehere ($4.5M) + Frost ($864K) + 1st ($5.364)
Backlund ($5.35M) + 4th for Armia ($2.6M)
Ryan ($3.125) to Ottawa for 4th rounder
Yes, we are overpaying in each deal, but you're going to have to move salary at this point. The goal is to get the pieces that make the team stronger where we are weakest.
Tkachuk($7.0M)-Monahan($6.375M)-Lindholm($4.85M)
Mangipane($2.75M)-Frost($864k)-Toffoli($5.0M)
Dube($779K)-Bennett($2.55M)-Armia($2.6M)
Lucic($5.25M)-Gawdin($750K)-Robinson($700K)
Rinaldo($700K)
($40.168)
Giordano($6.75M)-Kylington($750K)
Hanifin($4.95M)-Andersson($4.55M)
Gostisbehere($4.5M)-Tanev($4.5M)
Valimaki($895K)
($26.895)
Markstrom($6.0M)
Rittich($2.75M)
($8.75)
$75.813M + 2.67M BO = $78.483 ($3.017 cap space less bonuses)
The other alternative is to change the deal with Philadelphia.
Gaudreau ($6.75M) + 2nd for Sanheim($3.25M) + Frost ($864K) + 1st ($4.174)
That could allow us to take a run at Hall changing the lineup.
Tkachuk($7.0M)-Monahan($6.375M)-Lindholm($4.85M)
Hall($8.0M)-Frost($864k)-Mangipane($2.75M)
Dube($779K)-Bennett($2.55M)-Armia($2.6M)
Lucic($5.25M)-Gawdin($750K)-Robinson($700K)
Rinaldo($700K)
($43.168)
Giordano($6.75M)-Kylington($750K)
Hanifin($4.95M)-Andersson($4.55M)
Sanheim($3.25M)-Tanev($4.5M)
Valimaki($895K)
($25.645)
Markstrom($6.0M)
Rittich($2.75M)
($8.75)
$75.813M + 2.67M BO = $78.483 ($1.267 cap space less bonuses)
Two ways of changing the dynamics of the lineup.

Why not keep Gaudreau for another year and simply add a value winger who can score at a moderate pace. There are still some available.

I can't see us signing Hall at this point.
I would like to see the Flames add Toffoli though. Good 2nd line RW option. Then we can worry about making small trades to be cap compliant.

because then we are moving into Gaudreau's final contract year where he has some trade protection, why not be a proactively managed team for once?
The other big question is - is Tree okay with his two top forwards being Monahan and Gaudreau again, can they get it done when it comes to playoff time?

Its risky, key question will Gaudreau re-sign with the Flames? My guess the answer is no.
They have to aware of this and the fact, the core has under achieved especially in the playoffs.
I would think they need to make a change.
