$50 a day? Damn that's actually embarrassing we are paying them that little. They could collect cans while they strike and make more money.

I could make a lot of money by travelling to another country setting up a business, and then hire a bunch of foreign workers for $30 a day, bring them to Canada to work and then claim they are still making their usual $5 a day in Bangladesh so everything is A-OK.

I have no details, but I would assume because they are getting paid by their company first, that Canada is paying that company a set amount, and they then pay their regular wage to the workers, and Canada "tops up" the amount at $50 a day. So you would have to know their regular wage to find their total pay. Obviously it is going to not be great, but it will be more than $50 a day. I would hope the workers knew all of this before signing up.

I can guarantee you if I set up a business in Canada and did this exact scenario I would be getting calls from them saying what I was doing is illegal. I'd be a millionaire within a few years if I could start a cleaning company, bring in workers for $50 a day while still paying them $10 a day wherever they're from.

The question is whether their SA employer has to increase their wage to parity with Canadians doing the same job while they are here.

Which doesn't matter I wouldn't think. They are working in Canada, not South Africa. They have to follow Canadian laws. Does McDonalds pay their Filipino workers $20 a day and then $10 in the Philippines?

Hmmm....it appears they're making their regular SA wages so this isnt crazy, this is like anyone else doing their work, for their company, just somewhere else.

But at the same time if they're singing protest songs over low wages then they obviously didnt know about this up front.

Either that or at some point they found out what Firefighters make here compared to what they're paid at home and are pissed about knowing what the Canadian guy next to them makes.

Once again, not knowing what the SA guys were making down there makes this argument difficult. If they were getting $50 there and get an additional $50 here, for an 8 hour shift that is over minimum wage. Do I think they deserve more- of course.

But if my boss came up to me and said "we are going to double your salary to go work somewhere else for two months"- I'd jump at it.

Read a little bit on a SA forum about this. Apparently it is a program to employee young men who are getting into trouble, otherwise unemployed. Sounds like a decent deal for them.

From the article:
It also states that what the amount the firefighters make in Canada is on top of what they make at home.

That ranges from about 2,400 rand a month (the equivalent of $170 Cdn) to 14,000 rand (about $1,200 Cdn) for a crew leader.


So yeah- they are being drastically underpaid. Am I allowed to blame the current NDP government for this one?

This needs to be investigated and any laws that are broken need to be handled with accordingly. A forest fire doesn't give you free reign to break labour laws.

Doing the right thing after being caught...how did the government allow that to happen in the first place? And they keep mentioning how the firefighters signed a contract at $50 a day like it is relevant. Guess what? I could go to a lot of third world countries and make vulnerable poor people sign contracts to work in Canada for $20 a day as well. Doesn't mean it's legal or the contract is valid. The government needs to pay them more than minimum wage to make this right and someone needs to take responsibility for allowing it to happen in the first place.
