Why not?

I probably would have put him at Democratic Institutions since that's right up his policy wonk alley but he's the kind of guy that you can put in at any Ministry and get solid results. There's a reason why he survived the Martin purge of Chretien loyalists from cabinet.

For one you'd have a President and Prime Minister. And with party politics it could get quite messy.
This may show some ignorance on my part, but why?

Why does our system have to change at all minus the Queen? We can do what ever we want.

You need someone to approve the government.

Only Monarch or President can be head of state.
Prime Minister is head of government

If for example Trudeau was Prime Minster and head of state, he'd never call another election. Government falls and he becomes dictator.

Calgary didn't "get stiffed". We didn't elect anyone to the government here sending only opposition MPs to Ottawa, so naturally they aren't going to be appointed to cabinet.

I'm super proud of Kent being appointed to cabinet and hope he does an excellent job there.

Bill Morneau looks to be a really strong pick for Finance. Excellent CV for such an important portfolio.

Regional representation. About as balanced as possible.

I'm pretty surprised that Kang from Calgary wasn't given a cabinet position. He might not have the political career comparable to other MPs but I think he would have been a good choice especially considering Trudeau wanted to focus on diversity in his cabinet positions.

^He seems to have successfully done so regardless.

Stephane Dion has been a fantastic MP and was a great Minister of Environment. He represents the true center for the Canadian political spectrum and could have easily been a Progressive Conservative back in the day instead of a Liberal.

The CPC campaign against him was effective at making him look stupid, but the people around him know better.

... how many Cabinet spots did you think Alberta MP's were going to get? Because diversity would have been served with any of them (considering that the four Alberta members can represent the physically disabled, Sikh, LGBT, and Indian communities). Realistically there was going to be 1 from Calgary and that being the case I'd rather have Kent.

I'm a little surprised. He has the right CV but I thought they'd give that portfolio to someone with more legislative experience (Brison, McCallum et al) and start Morneau off at a smaller economic portfolio.

Precisely. People assume he is not intelligent because his English is not top notch, but the guy knows his stuff. In the academic community he is well respected. As a previous minister he pioneered the Clarity Act (his credentials on national unity are impeccable), and is well respected on the environment. Could have also been a good Minister of Democratic Institutions.

Was thinking the same thing. Should do a great job.

Hopefully Paul Martin is there helping and influencing decisions as well.

Precisely, speaking for myself the moment the Tories decided to personally smear Dion, one of the brighter minds to hold public office, as some some kind of bumbling fool was moment I wanted them out. It was so very very low.

He could have been a good minister of anything IMO.

The fact that he was leader of the liberal party for 2 years, lost the bid to be PM, stepped back into a smaller role while checking his ego and continuing to do his job tells you all you need to know about the guy.

Pretty sure that will be multiple portfolios including Justice, Health, Intergovernmental Affairs, and Revenue.
