I honestly thought Gaudreau was gone initially, then I thought it was perhaps multiple 1sts, which I was ok with. When they announced it was just a 1st and 2 2nds, that totally blew me away.

I didn't think any of those guys were traded. They are the future and all 3 have done everything they can to prove themselves.
Without giving up any of those 3, the only logical piece in my view was Hudler +#15. I was still doubtful because he was such a key player/veteran, but if a guy like Hamilton was on the block, it was a deal that had to be done.
Then I saw the trade, and I was blown away.

I thought the return would be what it was PLUS a 1st next season. Very very happy with the result.

I find it hilarious that before all this when Kessel was still a bruin:
Boston had: Kessel
Toronto had:2010 1st (Seguin), 2011 1st (Hamilton)
And 5 years later...
Boston has: ----
Toronto has:----
Dallas has: Tyler Seguin
Pittsburgh has: Phil Kessel
Calgary has: Dougie Hamilton
And sure both those teams have gotten players back and good prospects out of the deals, but none of them look to be on par with Kessel, Seguin, or Hamilton.

there was certainly lots to be excited about in Calgary without this trade ....
Sam Bennett making the jump for good.
Another year of watching Monahan and Gaudreau evolve
Giordano back in the fold
Brodie back with Giordano after learning how to carry a partner without him.
Ortio on a one way pushing two vets for the starter position.
A healthy year for Backlund?
What is Micheal Ferland over 80 games after the playoff performance
The Dougie Hamilton is a Calgary Flame thing is just to surreal to get my head around. Probably the biggest thing I'm looking forward to at training camp. Hamilton in practice jersey C on his chest doing the turns. Then to see where he suits up in ex games for partners etc.

Yep
For so many years my pre training camp excitement revolved around hoping Iginla was still awesome and clinging to the belief that the Dustin Boyds of the world would be the next Gretzky.
Honestly I would be excited just to watch Gaudreau again. Oh yeah there's Sean 30 goal, first line centre Monahan. There's Sam Bennett, there's Frolik, theres Brodie, Gio, and Dougie Fricken Hamilton......Good god I can't handle the sheer amount of awesome.

Agree with everything you said.
But the bolded is the really intriguing part.
I love the depth on D this year, regardless of how it shakes out, but there is a possibility that we can hit another Russell/Wideman type homer, if they can find a partner that has some real chemistry with Hamilton.
So many options, with Smid, Engelland (less likely as he's a RH shot), Nakladal and Wotherspoon. Or even a wildcard like Kylington.
If I remember correctly, Wotherspoon and Hamilton were partners in the WJCs. If they could re-ignite that chemistry again, suddenly you have elevated Wotherspoon's play and got him over the hump, just making the Flames all that more deeper still.
Can't wait to see how it plays out.

On the opening roster should be Dougie Hamilton, Michael Frolik and Sam Bennett. A top two pairing 22 year old defensemen, one of the better two way wingers in the game capable of 20-20 seasons and IMO a 19 year old franchise type prospect in Bennett.
Any way you slice is those are massive additions for this team. Maybe it's a teeny bit disingenuous to add Bennett but I believe in this kid more then even Gaudreau and Monahan up front. When you think of true number one centers Bennett fits the mould.
Quickly went through the thread early this morning, what a roller coaster.

I'm ecstatic to add a D like Hamilton, but we can't let expectations run away on us. We were already treated to one of the stronger defensive corps in the league last year, in particular one of the best top pairings.
So when people say that Hamilton is a "top pairing guy" or a "#1 D" or even "franchise potential", we've got to remember that most top pairings in the league are significantly worse than ours. He should be a great addition, but we can't expect him to be another Gio. Only the Oilers have Giordanos growing on trees.

I haven't seen anyone suggest Hamilton is another Giordano.
However, it isn't just "adding Dougie Hamilton". The issue is: how does it impact the roster?
Last year, the 3rd pairing was Smid/Engelland. They weren't very good.
That forced Russell/Wideman to take more defensive responsibility. And it forced Giordano/Brodie to play north of 25 minutes per night.
By adding Hamilton, you get a 2nd pairing of ????/Hamilton which, regardless of who it is, will be better than Smid/Engelland.
Its not just that you improve THAT pairing, but it also means you can take some of the defensive responsibilities away from RusselWideman and utilize them in ways they are more suited for. That makes THEM better.
It also means you can reduce Girdano/Brodie's ice-time by 2 or 3 minutes, which will pay huge dividends for them as the season wears on.
Sometimes adding one guy can impact everyone.
And I think in this case it does, because last year there was such a disparity between the top 2 pairings and the 3rd pairing.

This is a really good analysis, I like your take on it. The Hamilton impact is going to be really big because it gives Hartley much flexibility on D to even out the pairings, and the ice time.
Last year may have been a blessing in disguise though when Gio went down. Engo (and the rest of us) saw that he has the ability to step up. I hope he's hungry to prove himself and doesn't just settle for being the #6 guy (although he will be).
I envision our D-corps to consist of a clear cut top pairing which will likely be Gio/Brodie. The next two pairings being equal enough in offense and defensive responsibility that there is no clear cut 2nd pair 3rd pair.
I'd be ecstatic if Schlemko was OK with signing on as a #7. I don't see a future for Smiddy here, although I like him as a player and locker room guy. Always seems to have a positive attitude.
