Why would Holtby even try to start with $8M? Who is that possibly comparable to?
I would think Varlamov's contract would be a good comparable for Holtby.

I would think Holtby gets in the $5.7-6.5 range for a single season. Anything over that until he puts up more than a single seasons of stellar numbers is risky.

No one is concerned with the dollar figure for Gio but the term given his age. Fair concern. If his contract is going to hinder us in those later years it probably makes more sense to take the assets and cap space.

I mostly find it annoying how some posters are claiming his rumored initial ask of 9 million per season on an 8 year contract is a demand.
If we want to compete within the next 5 years then we need to keep Gio. He is our best player. The actual contract that he signs will be much much more reasonable than his initial ask.
Edit: I don't mean to derail, my bad

So the wings are looking for a defender still, do you think Franson makes sense there? Where do you think Franson goes and do you think the Flames are in the market for any of the remaining free agents?

At least make the high offer realistic. Holtby is asking to be the second highest paid goalie in the NHL after one season of starting goaltender numbers. I know he won't get $8M, but even as a starting point that's ridiculous.

Chicago has the best development/trade system going. They have players to play around the core guys like Kane, Toews, Seabrook, and Keith. Once these players have success (in my opinion because they are playing with talented players) instead of paying them, they flip those players while hot to obtain new cheap great young prospects or draft picks. Then they go through the same cycle.

He isn't making that a starting point. Referring to my original post about how some posters don't understand the arbitration process. The teams number is usually way too low and the players number is usually too high. They both know they will meet in the middle. Holtby isn't asking for 8 million.
People not understanding this is what I find annoying

Cody Franson tells TSN 1040 that Boston is one of the teams he is currently in contact with.

If the team was offering $4M I'd agree with you, but I actually don't think the team is too far off with their number. Holtby is.

Personally, I see one of Franson or Glencross going to the oilers. I hope that whoever they get, they overpay for.
I still think the Flames will need some secondary scoring and hope they address it through either a signing (Semin) or trade a few "spare parts" for 1 player

Fair enough.
Personally, I see holtby being worth somewhere in the 6 million range. Goalies usually aren't as good as he is at the age of 25.

Franson could help fill the hole left by Dougie, but if they end up paying Franson even close to what BT signed Hamilton for.. Boston might riot.

I could see Franson going to the Oilers if he would accept a 1-2, maybe 3 year deal. I don't see them offering any longer term than that.
Glencross probably the same. Short term only.

This rumour of Franson to the Oilers is hilarious. It reminds me of the summer they signed Sheldon Sourray in late July or August to that amazing contract and then paraded him through the streets like the next Pronger... 6x6 or even 7x7 for Franson would be perfect!

My guess is Franson will sign with the Bruins for six years, $34.5 million

Franson to Boston makes sense.
Basically the B's would significantly downgrade from Hamilton and Lucic to Franson and Belesky and add 3 first rounders, 2 seconds and the other prospect they got from LA

That would not be as huge a problem long term for Boston considering the players they got in the draft are excellent. Takes a lot of balls though to do what they did.
