What a win win situation for Flames fans.
Option 1 - he leaves and crushes the souls of that fan base
Option 2 - he signs for max, leaves even less money for a supporting cast, and enters his declining years on a team that is regressing in all areas around him.
After Ron "not if but when" MacLean proclaimed them to be the next dynasty 10 years ago, things have gone about as well as Flames fans could have hoped for.

Heard a good one from an oilers fan today.
Mavi will sign a 2 year deal and basically threaten the Oilers to “fix things”.
This gives Mavi maximum income going forward guaranteed.
I asked the obvious question…why doesn’t he do that now?
I also love the “what’s best for my family” answer. Number one is money, and of any player in the nhl today, it’s exactly the same no matter where. All franchises would do max money for him. So now it’s about location, and especially if it’s an 8 year commitment.
He sure was non committing to anything!

Why do elite players have mc or mac in their names
Irish heritage hold special hockey powers or something?

I'm going to approach McDavid's contract the same way I did with the finals. Not gonna say anything - I don't want to jinx it.

Just saw that Dr. McDavid announced that the tenderness had a broken hand.
Just in case you were wondering who was running the medical operations for the greasers.

I could see it being another "cup or bust" situation, this time for real. Making game 7 of the finals was enough last time to convince Draisaitl to sign. I wouldn't be surprised if McDavid is saying to the Oilers, if we win the Cup next year, I'll re-sign for life. If we don't, I am gone. It could force the Oilers to push whatever chips they have left all in for one more kick at it.

Oiler fans listening to that should be concerned.

If I were a team that was interested in him, I would offer him the league max and on the side build him a house with a good basketball court inside.

They're not highly touted, but they are knocking on the door. Bowman's office door to ask for a trade.

McDavid sure sounds like he’s weighing all options in that clip. If he were 100% committed to spending the rest of his career with Dumpsterville, he’d probably say so. I certainly know what I’d do if I were in the extremely fortunate situation he’s currently in, and it definitely wouldn’t involve the Oilers.

hmm need to find a video clip, I thought I heard him say we don't have highly touted prospects knocking at the door, so it has to come from within the room.

McDavid: Well we come back and we do it again. You know, there’s no there’s no quit. You know, guys can take their time and, you know, get healthy, and guys will go through their process, whatever that process looks like for each individual person, but ultimately, it’s on every person in that room and that organization to dust themselves off, come back and be better. I know that’s cliche, but it’s true. You know, everyone’s got to find a new level. It’s not like we have a ton of cap room and we got a long list of, you know, of highly touted prospects knocking on the door. You know, it’s got to come from within the players that are playing. And everybody’s got to find a new level myself, myself included, just sort of following that up.
I think the team is certainly positioned to be really good again next year, really, really good again next year, beyond that I don’t know or care. You know, we’re worried about next year, and that’s the only focus.

It sounds like he is saying that the Oilers have no cap and no prospects, but they can take one more run. After that, he doesn't really care what happens because he will be elsewere.

It's kind of a rude thing to say about your own team's prospects. Even if it is true, each one of those kids is working hard and believes in themselves. To hear some like Connor McDavid say that publicly has to kind of sting.

"Well I should actually say they were highly touted prospects a few years ago. They've actually played a few seasons in the NHL. It's just that they're currently in a bit of legal snag at the moment, once that's resolved we should have some new signings to announce."

There it is. Because he won't be an Oiler beyond next year.
