Italians missed 2 as well for full time players, but that doesnt matter either.
You have to kick the ball 12 yards and not think about it too much. These players have taken thousands of penalties in training of they've got to this level.
There were some decent saves and then Rashford trying to be too cute.

You'll notice Italy brought in Florenzi cold. I don't think he had step on the field all tournament. It would have been cruel to ask him to take a penalty.

Lol. What?
He put them in a position not to lose.
If he wanted to put them in a position to win then maybe let Grealish Sancho and Rashford loose for 30 minutes on tired Italian legs instead of continuing with the toothless and ineffective Kane Sterling and Mount.
The writing was on the wall. It wasn't working with them three.
And I'd argue El Tel and Bobby Robinson were far superior managers than him.
*edit* Cole's notes.

They do it to themselves. Weight of expectation.

Even Sven! If the ball doesn't loop over Seamen's head....

This isn't like LVG swapping Krul for Cillassen. Southgate bunged them up, subbing so late.
Donnarumma is in the trifecta of best keepers in the world right now, with Neuer and Oblak. He's gonna look good warming the pine in Paris.

Southgate needs to find a system that gets more of his attackers out there, even against overmatched teams he persisted with two DMs for whatever reason. Kudos to him for grinding out results these last two tournaments, but it has never looked all that convincing and it has absolutely been aided by not having to play too many great teams. It's still progress for England, but he needs to get better as a manager if they are going to go anywhere.

Why blame the coach? Did he tell them to do those stupid stutter steps before they took the shots? haha

I get that england fans are riled after the loss but I still think on reflection that southgate managed extremely well. For me he had two world class destroyer type DMs and a bunch of high end flair wingers and a forward. Without two box to box possession dominating central mids I think he chose a good system for his personnel.
Plugging in a bunch of high end final third guys when his team didn't have the skill to keep the ball in the middle of the park and it would have been over way before pks.
And if not for a cheezy scrambled goal and Rashford losing his head he would have brought home a trophy. Negative tactics for sure but he got results. After years of higher profile guys crashing out way earlier I think his results deserve respect. My two cents anyway.

Poor decisions in penalties by Southgate. Kane 1st, Maguire(?), two cold young guns and a 19 year old last?? Pickford did his job, fair play to him.
Oh well, on to the World Cup. Maybe we'll see Canada actually make the tournament for once. Wouldn't bet on it like.

Outside of the first 20 minutes or so Italy was by far the better team and really in a lot of ways England were lucky it even got to PKs
xG in the 90 minutes were Italy 2.05 - England 0.49.
Full marks to Italy.
It’s unfortunate for England because I think they have a great roster. Grealish was terrifying in extra time when he came on. England really should have given Rashford and Sancho a run at the tired Italian center backs. Played for penalties instead.

All those guys should have been on in extra time and run at old man Chiellini and Bonucci, both on yellow cards.

The fan reaction videos just to the Shaw goal has me feeling pretty bad for England. All of my extended family is in England, and came to see how big a deal this was for them over the last week or so.

Social media racism is a given, whether they'll be subject to in-person racism at stadiums this season will be something to watch for.

Yup.
When it got to extra time I thought England would be smart to do what Italy did against Germany in 2006 and just throw all of their attacking talent out. Italy wanted no part of penalties against Germany that year.
By the end of the match they had Del Piero, Totti, Iaquinta, and Gilardino on the pitch. Effectively playing with 4 strikers pretty much.
