Keep in mind that he coached Brouwer in the AHL for 1 season. Likely the only reason he was even mentioned.

So far I really like what Peters is saying about the team. Sounds like one confident SOB that is going to get this team into shape.

Absolutely different from what GG brought.

So great, he has all the talking points. Has said all the things we like to hear every time a new coach comes in. Blah, blah, blah.

I have zero confidence in this decision as a coach and his record doesn't help either.

"We want speed, we want the puck, and we want to attack. We're gonna play quick and we're gonna play hard."

Music to my ears.

Listening to the press conference, I am impressed by what Bill is saying. It is a breath of fresh air from the things Gulutzen always regurgitated.

with Stone in the room, made a point of talking about Anderson, not just a name check. Still, doubt he was trying to send a message

Pretty much called this months ago. Treliving was going to find a coach that’s a clone of GG because it checks all of his boxes. That hasn’t changed because Tre has a specific way he thinks his team should play and that’s why no other coach wad basically considered. I’m not going to guess whether I think this is the wrong move or the right move, but it sounds pretty much like an expensive lateral move at the moment with the previous staff on the books next year.

Just look at what Hurricanes’ columnist Luke DeCock had to say about the common criticisms of Bill Peters on the Fan 960 with Rob Kerr:
- No identity
- Couldn’t get most out of its players
- Very technical
- Plays soft
- Mediocre special teams

Basically sounds like the criticisms people here had about GG.

The statistics and record is uncanny as well

Gulutzan
37-35-10-84 points
-27 goal differential
PP/PK = 98%
Corsi: #3
Fenwick: #2
Scoring Chances For %: #3
Shots For %: #4
Shooting %: #3

Peters
36-35-11-83 points
-28 goal differential
PP/PK = 96%
Corsi: #1
Fenwick: #3
Scoring Chances For %: #2
Shots For %: #3
Shooting %: #4

Here’s my summary of the coverage, apologies for the typos:

- Treliving did not interview anyone else
- Lots of strengths with Gulutzan’s systems. Went through some analytics, will figure out how the Flames play, know what he’s dealing with first before deciding on the right system. Face offs, puck possession, active d is important.
- Biggest strength is to make sure he has a good staff and he won’t be rushing into building the staff.
- Won’t get the Eddie Lack sound bite, apologizes to Eddie Lack.
- Treliving about experience in other coaches- Treliving’s job is to make the best decision based on what he knows. He doesn’t have a long relationship with Bill, but Treliving says he’s done his homework and based on his network, he believes that Peters has experience as assistant coaches, IIHF, etc. Treliving’s job is not to make the safe decision by based on what he thinks is the right choice. Thought it was important to move quickly to get Bill.
- Peters is excited most about Monahan, Gaudreau, will leave that pair together, will figure out what to do with rw later. Mentions Tkachuk, called him a unique player like Marchand, 3M line and knows Brouwer will try to bounce back. Give him a good chance to bounce back, Gio and Hamilton are elite, still scratching the surface offensively. TJ and Hamonic round out top 4, with Andersson and Kulak (didn’t mention the rest of the d). Wants to get to know the players first, training camp will be very competitive.
- Treliving and Bill will work together for the coaching staff. Bill is very detailed and prepared and tactical. Need to build relationships once order to maximize player output. Bill will be patient with staff, will not micromanage his staff. When the sun sets however it will be on him, he will still have final say. Be unpredictable.
- Peters will have high expectations. References his time with Detroit in 2013.
- Demanding without being demeaning is important
- Bill and Babcock have a close relationship, take a little bit of good from everyone and Babcock has a large influence but ultimately they’re different people.
- Bill wants to be the hardest working team in the league. Want to play quick and want to attack and possess the puck.

I think it's mind boggling that he didn't talk to any other coaches. How can that been seen as anything but a failure by the GM?

Tre didn't interview anyone else? That's an epic fail in my view. How do you run a business like that? Peters is far from a proven commodity.

I would have been from NYC to Viking and back already.

Maybe AV and Sutter weren't interested. But at least talk to them?

At least he realizes getting out of the d-zone quickly is important.

Out of general interest. This is a discussion forum, right?

Or am I supposed to have the same opinion as the majority and clap "oh happy day" because ANOTHER new coach has come to Calgary?

Forgive me for being skeptical of the future and if anything will change with another losing coach.
