I think it can be argued that his acquisition is worth more like 7-8 wins.
|
Using the ZIP's system which predicts wins for a team over the rest of the year Price is worth 1.5 -2 wins more then what the Jays would have had in the 5th start over the rest of the year.
Not saying it is 100% accurate or I agree, but if we can get an extra 3-4 wins it is probably the difference between playoffs and not

Yeah, I get that. But if GMs agreed with that number, no team would ever make a deadline acquisition.
I am willing to bet they do a fair bit better than 32-28. But we shall see.

Agreed, I don't these systems take into account that Price will allow the bullpen to get more rest which should make them more efficient than they'd be otherwise. Not to mention morale, something that is impossible to measure because it affects some players more than others.

Price individually might only be the difference between winning 2-4 more games, but the mental boost that everyone else may receive is harder to quantify. Adding to that mental boost will be the fans. The Jays sold 21,000 tickets in about six hours after the trade was announced. And thanks to the two trades this week, they have gone from 10-18k for midweek games to 30k, 27k, 30k this week, and looks like they will be in that range again today. An amped up crowd will play on the field.

Huh? All I'm saying is that I hope that Colabello's recent struggles don't mean that he's turning into a pumpkin. Given that he's having a career year and is easily the league leader in BABIP, I don't think this concern is misplaced. My comment about the two pitches he saw in his first two at bats was more frustration than anything. I don't go from thinking a player is a superstar to not based on one game.

He would also be a new lead off option if Travis is gone for a while.

The other thing to consider is based on run differential the Jays should have about 10 more wins than they currently do, so it's entirely possible that price is only worth 2 more wins, but that they jays start winning at their run differential pace. I predict them to go 28-22 in their final 50.

From John Fisher of ESPN Stats & Info: The Blue Jays are 51-51 this season (14th-best record in MLB) despite outscoring their opponents by 100 runs (second-best run differential). Were the season to end today, they'd be the first team in major league history to have a run differential of at least plus-100 to finish .500 or worse. Currently, the worst record by a team with a run differential of at least plus-100 belongs to the 1955 Tigers (79-75, .513 win percentage).

Depending on the cost I'd do it. He's under team control through 2017 so the Jays can recoup his acquisition cost either by trading him or by trading Saunders in the offseason. If they're asking for the moon on him (AKA a cost that likely can't be made up at a later date) then no... Revere is more average then good... but otherwise he'd be some speed and decent defense with an alright bat.
Also: Jays should start price on Monday instead of Sunday. Have Dickey pitch on short rest (he's not a max effort guy anyways so his arm can handle it). http://www.bluebirdbanter.com/2015/7...and-other-blue

This is starting to remind me of Omar Minaya when everyone thought the Expos would be contracted in 2002.
AA's all in here. If the Jays miss the playoffs, he's going to lose his head.

Gives up a lot of flyballs... that's not so bad in the giant bowl that is Safeco but I'd fear it a bit in the homer heavan that is the ALE. He can K guys though.
Can't imagine that it's gonna be any top prospects. At least I hope not.

Only given up one HR all season so hopefully that's a sign that he can manage. I assume all his games haven't been at Safeco.
