This is like watching a train-wreck in slow motion. And then a bunch of other trains pile into it as well. And a jet. And then a building falls on top of the whole thing.

And then at the end, while everyone else is writhing in pain or dead, amidst all the destruction, Gary Bettman crawls out from under the debris, dusts off his suit jacket, and walks away like nothing happened.

You should read up on the history of the diamond backs and the building of Bank One Ballpark. It will help explain why most of us Coyote fans question GWI's motives and connection to baseball.

A County supervisor got shot over that deal

It did nothing of the sort. The county was taxed to support the stadium and that upset people. A crazy person shot a politician. But it said nothing to cast any doubt on GWI's motives.

Oh right.... Goldwater was founded in 1988. Huge uproar about stadium using using tax money to fund. You would think this is a perfect forum for them to further their cause. Public money going to a private enterprise, huge public issue. Where were they then? Why didn't they sue then? Isn't this the type of thing they are portrayed as being completely against? Why weren't they crying out about the citizen's right to vote on the issue then.

Here is why

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A charter member of the ownership group that brought baseball to the Valley of the Sun, Ken Kendrick’s involvement in the general partnership took on added significance in 2004 when he assumed the role of Managing General Partner of the National League Arizona Diamondbacks. Kendrick has taken an active role in the day-to-day operation of the D-backs and is the organization’s designated representative when Major League Baseball owners convene during the course of the year.

Seems they apply different rules when it applies to them and theirs.

They are also not above helping themselves in the fight for the Phoenix sports entertainment dollar.

Here is a list of baseball related sports complexes receiving public money. Why doesn't GWI object to any of these? I am sure most of this money would come under their definition of subsidy but the only object when it is Hockey.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diam...e-trouble.html

Quote:
Glendale spent $158 million to open a ballpark complex in 2009 for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox. The city expected to receive $142 million from the sports authority. The latest forecast puts the figure at $79 million, and the money won't start flowing until 2021, four years later than expected.
Goodyear spent $103 million to build a ballpark for the Cleveland Indians. Goodyear hoped to receive nearly $90 million from the sports authority, beginning in 2017. The latest estimate shows Goodyear getting $47 million, with payments also beginning in 2021. The city also wants additional money from the authority to cover costs for adding the Cincinnati Reds to the complex, but those funds are more uncertain.
Major renovations are coming due for ballparks in the Maryvale area of Phoenix, home to the Milwaukee Brewers, and Peoria, where the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners play. The sports authority projects it will meet its pledge of nearly $10 million for the Maryvale park in 2010 and $15 million for the Peoria one in 2014. But there's an uncertainty. The way Cactus League facilities are gaining amenities, the teams may want costlier renovations or new stadiums before signing new leases. Consider the Cubs.
The Cubs want a new complex well before their lease expires in 2016, or they will consider taking Florida up on its offer. A proposed ticket surcharge for all Cactus League patrons to pay for the facility failed this spring in the Legislature. Mesa officials say the offer to sell property guarantees the city will cover the cost, but they also hope to benefit from a broader solution for the Cactus League.

The lack of protest against the Diamondbacks stadium doesn't make their complaints against the Coyotes situation illegitimate.

We will see. The courts will decide if their complaints are legitimate.

But their perception of being a think tank protecting the people is a sham. They are out for their own interests.

Its almost like all the Winnipegers and QC citizens that are suddenly appalled for the tax payers of Glendale and outraged that Government would pay subsidies for professional sports facilities when their own were financed in much the same manner.

Apparently it is all the rage to be feign outrage when it benefits you.

  • City-provincial property-tax break: $816,140 annually, based on current assessment
  • City business-tax refund: $250,000 annually”

What are their interests? Eliminate the Coyotes so their hordes of fans will go back to the Diamondbacks?

Yes. Eliminating a professional sports team is in their best interests. They will get a cut of the money people would have spent on going to Coyotes games and buying their merchandise.

So all you pro GWI guys going to get a referendum together to stop the 10m subsidy from going to True North or just sit there and be hypocrites?

Well then luckily for them the Coyotes have enough problems that their interests coincide with actually serving public interest.

Could be they were just low hanging fruit but the coincidence that all public money for baseball is ignored while GWI expends so much energy fighting the Coyotes is too big to ignore.

Meh... what happens, happens. I would say it will all be over soon enough but I will have been saying that for 3 years now.

It comes down to public interest. If people care about the Diamondbacks, then they're less likely to be contrary to money going to them, conflict of interest aside. As a result of a dearth of people who care about the Coyotes, it looks worse and it is worse. It's not even like they're close to being a healthy business, they're a financial disaster that no one goes to see. The Roughnecks get around the same number of fans to games and if there was a tax measure to the ratio of dollars to population of this thing in Glendale to prop them up I can pretty much guarantee people would be tripping out.

The "where is the outrage" thing about True North and Winnipeg is fair I guess. Except that the NHL is our NFL, and I'm sure the Cardinals get some pretty sweet tax incentives.

You have a point there. Most of the backroom professional sports deals are awful. But it is how business is done. I am sure it is this same way everywhere. I was just trying to point out the hypocrisy of those suddenly concerned for the tax payers of Glendale while attempting to land the team.

It could be that as the Coyotes are the least followed of the big 4 that made them the target. But then again they have only started winning after all this ownership debacle started. Phoenix loves a winner. Wouldn't be surprised to find out Moyes is funding this whole thing out of pure spite. The other factor is that this is happening during an economic downturn. If Glendale could easily absorb the loss it would not be such a big issue.
